I am from Australia and I love arabic- I know words like- 'keefaq, na'am, khalas, habib, sharmuta etc"

and foods like lahme and zubne. The language actually rocks.

I actually spent a year or so trying to learn Arabic, I stopped, it was fun though at least I can pick out a few things if people are speaking it... I think :O

It's a very fine style of writing where a single misstep in detail means an entirely different word. The same applies to any other creative language. In reality, though, hearing any language that isn't close to romanized characters sounds like jibberish. I don't see why this only applies to Americans, though.
