Hagoromo seems to have inherited the nine tomoe eye's ripples and the base byakugan's color, but not the activated Byakugan's color, the nine tomoe eye's color or the nine tomoes.
With this in mind, what if Hamura did inherit the color of the byakugan for his base eye, but it's only a ruse and he can activate it into a red eye with the nine tomoes, but no ripples? And instead of being able to use the six paths techniques, he would be able to use all of the sharingan techniques. Kamui, Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu, Kagutsuchi, Izanagi, Izanami, Susano'o, Koto Amatsukami, and possibly a sharingan tech/doujutsu we haven't seen yet? Of course there could also be the possibility of a whole new set of abilities that counterpart the six paths.
The Rinnegan appears to depict the moon and encompass buddhism more than Hinduism, referencing the realms and their races rather than the rulers/deities names themselves. Perhaps Hamura's depicts the sun and encompasses the names and powers of Hindu deities, similar to the kami technique names of the sharingan. This would also parallel the names of Hagoromo's sons. Ashura was named after the Asura realm and race while Indra was named after their ruler.
Either way, this eye may have degraded into base byakugan just like the sharingan did with Indra and the Uchiha, and the hyuuga and ootustsuki on the moon are his Yin descendants that inherited his mental energy, while the Uzumaki are his yang descendants that inherited his physical energy and life force, as well as his fuin jutsus.
Yes, I'm sure parts of these theories are outdated lols while others sound ridiculous, but Hagoromo and his brother are twins from the same genome so logic would suggest they'd inherit similar to the same eyes.
Toneri may be seeking Hamura's heirs' reincarnations to obtain this doujutsu just as Madara unlocked the Rinnegan and Hanabi could be the Yin descendant while Karin may be the Yang?
Please keep any plot elements you know about the movie beyond the ones I've mentioned in spoiler tags, or just don't mention them at all lols and try to move along if you know the whole story and outcome already.
