)It's not a few people having sharingan either. The Uchiha clan has existed for centuries. It's bound to be somewhat extensive.
One clan can cause damage. Orochimaru and some sound nin destroyed a good section of Konoha within a day. Uchiha who are the only clan in all of Konoha to be established as the Police Force and thus main military power would definitely cause trouble. There's also a factor of the majority of the clan (so over 50%... meaning nearly all adults) were currently in the Police Force at the time the coup was going to go down.
There were other factors to the massacre besides conflict, but I won't go into that now.
Either way, you're entitled to your own opinion and I respect it completely.

I'm not going to say it was a "nice" act. It wasn't. Itachi admits this and he felt remorse for it. In fact, he's the only individual in this manga who knows the truth and points out flaws within it.
However, to dislike a character on killing other individuals when the entire clan was dying according to Danzo's words (which he said both in front of Hiruzen/elders/Itachi and a second time only in front of Itachi) is silly imo. Itachi didn't have a choice as to whether or not the clan lived, only if he carried it out himself. He just chose the option because it would entail less bloodshed. I don't think that's particularly evil. If he could have spared them, he would have.
Itachi has only been praised primarily for his ability to function as a shinobi. This isn't a lie in any manner. Also, only a handful of people who know the truth praised him, and considering that nearly all have been from Konoha's side, they have good right to do so. The vast majority of NV hates him and he will remain hated for all eternity because that is what he wanted- he wished for this so that people would still think of the Uchiha clan as noble and not as people that just wanted to overthrow the system and were willing to disrupt peace for their own gain.
There's also a factor of no one actually praising him for the act that you mentioned. Not a soul. People consider him to be a hero due to the burden he carried (which is true, he fits antihero status in this manga). If the act were okay, then people like Hiruzen wouldn't feel guilty since the massacre was at least 50% his fault. He was a weak leader who couldn't keep Danzo in line, something he admitted himself.
You dislike Itachi for killing... but don't you really like Deidara? Deidara bombed entire villages in the name of his art. Elders, babies, children, women, men, etc for fun as he laughed away at the ensuing explosions. Lol
