Itachi was retconned into being a Hero.

It seems pretty obvious that Itachi was intended to be a villain but Kishi decided to change him into being a hero at some point simply to prolong sasuke's "evil/Revenge" subplot. I wouldn't put it past him either, since this is the same man who even admitted not knowing how to kill Madara, saying he forgot about Sakura's character, and claiming he didn't know whether he would have Naruto and Sasuke fight at the end of the series as friends or as enemies.

Simply put, the retcon ruined his character for me. I prefer Itachi-Pursuit Itachi.


And even IF it wasn't a retcon, it was still done pretty badly. How can one clan seriously be any trouble for an entire village? You've got the likes of Gai, kakashi, Asuma, Hiruzen, Jiraiya, Hiashi, Kurenai, Choza and all the clans like the Hyuga, Akimichi, Inuzuka, Aburame, etc. there is NO WAY IN HELL that a clan with only a FEW people having sharingan could have caused any real problem to these people.
