That's the problem. People don't understand the story even back in part 1. Naruto's goal was to beat sasky up and drag his corpse back to the village. Naruto didn't go all the way just try to give sasky's headband a scratchy Lol

And how does that influence the outcome of the fight? The fact is, he didn't go for the kill, so he ended up on the ground, simple as that. If Sasuke were still a close friend of him and Sasuke did not regard him as a close friend, the same thing would most likely happen, and this time, he might actually finish him off.

You aren't getting my point. I am saying whether or not he's the mc doesn't change the fact, that he would have most likely gone for the headband if Sasuke was his friend, and he was wishing to bring him back. And, that's where Naruto's in a disadvantage, because if Sasuke didn't regard him as a close friend, he could have potentially finished things.

For one, the plot gave him intel on Pain, if he hadn't he would have ended up like Jiraya.
