A mystery has to give something tangible to go on.
AOT does nothing of the sort it throws something at you which your completely in the dark about unti'' it reveals more info later.
A mystery is something we can all ponder and try to figure out (Not completely) but to some extent with what is provided
AOT gives you nothing to snack on and analyze as the story advances its not a mystery its called shock value.
We all obviously know the church has some secret .
That is all you know and can gifure out as anything to do witht he church is never seen or heard on panel.
What era is it ?
All that is purposely with held because it ties into too much of the plot which is extremely poor story telling.
Most people that didn't enjoy it say it's about killing giant naked people. So yes, a lot of people don't get it. Sad though, cuz the plot is easy to understand.
Bro, I haven't seen anyone in this thread complaining about the titans' design, yet most people agree it's overrated. Its problems are mostly character related. I'm not a hater, nor a fan for that matter, but I think AoT is a market product for people with not-so-high standards in anime.
Tokyo Ghoul was bad in a lot of ways IMO.
I didn't enjoy Claymore.
I never checked DW out, I'm going to though.
The writing of TG and Claymore is inferior compared to AoT if you ask me. The characters, well... I hated them.
It's funny that so many call AoT overrated though Lol Most people who say that didn't understand the story and or even the characters. But hey, that's with pretty much everything popular.
things can get popular because a majority of people like it which means people understand it
AOT summed up
Titans eat people whiny kid *****es about killing them all
Goes out on expeditions where more and more pepole you "care" about die in increasingly bloody ways
@Bold: I don't want to go into that. I'll just say that Kaneki and Clare had more development than the whole AoTverse. But I won't get into the: Your show sucks compared to mine discussion. You might say FMA B is also inferior to AoT so i'd rather end this here.
What I really want to address is:
@red: Are you telling me by any chance that AoT has such a complex plot that so many people were unable to comprehend it?
Comparing Tokyo ghoul to attack on titan is stupid, TK had so much cliches and it felt boring untill the end but shingeki no kyojin on the other hand had so much action since ep 1 , so please know your place, even the characters in TK are all forgotten (expect for kaneki , touka and amon) which makes the show boring
All the characters are flat no personality beyond what emotion you first saw them with.
Development ? There still doing the same exact thing since beginning and nowhere close to finding out the "MYSTERY"
Meanwhile anything about the church, the city, its people, culture are all ignored.

1. What's in the basement?
2. How did Eren get his powers
3. Why was he given these powers?
4. Why was Annie's dad apologizing to her?
5. Who are the enemy shifters work for
6. What's the secret behind Ackerman?
7. What power did Historia's dad's wife have?
His character and the perception of him by others was built by his deception
We know that Itachi was truly a kind hearted person conflicted with honor and love for his family, village and peace.
He was about self sacrifice and stayed that way up until his very end.
He even acknowledged everything he did was wrong for him to do on his own.
Many sides to one character
Erin has been crying > angry > yell at titan > kill titan or cry while angry while killing titan
What are his hopes
What does he do on days off ?
Tell me something about him that doesn't include the word titan ....can't be done.
I didn't read and it prolly won't, but any character can be made to look good with enough effort, so one guy writing about Eren's "great character" doesn't really mean all that much.
I wouldn't go that far... well, not for the anime at least.
The anime has good animation and nice artwork, and as a series, it makes a good popcorn anime. But don't expect depth, because it's entertainment value is purely in it's antagonist's ruthlessness.

We also know Eren has love for his friends and family as well. We know why is Eren is angry and hates Titans. Eren has been about defeating the Titans because of the horrible things they've done to humanity up until now. Eren even acknowledged that he was wrong when he failed to fight with his friends in the forest of big-ass trees.
Itachi has been deceptive>deceptive>deceptive all for the sake of protecting Sasuke and Konoha.
Literally all the stuff you're saying can be applied to Itachi as well, and what you're saying about Itachi can be applied to Eren; just change a few words to fit their character traits. Unless deception and protection are automatically better traits than anger and protection, then Itachi and Eren are in the same boat.

Who is the female titan? Where due titans come from? What's in the Jaeger basement? What's up with the wall?
Those questions are something to ponder on. The point is to try and figure out what exactly is going on with the information given. The answers to the produced questions aren't random, they're in the story. Attack on Titan does exactly what you say it doesn't do.
I wasn't trying to say anything but honestly, all these claims of Attack on Titan being over-hyped and overrated is just critical speculation. People are simply being objective towards Attack on Titan because it's popular. When things become too popular they tend to be over-analyzed to the point where the criticism is pure spite.
Attack on Titan is great but people refuse to give credit where it's due. If Attack on Titan never received claims like "greatest anime ever!" "greatest character development!" "Amazing plot!" or "Best shonen out there!" then no one would look at it so partially.
if someone says Attack on Titan is the best anime ever and someone else thinks that One Piece is the best, then the One Piece fan is going to watch Attack on Titan purposely looking for flaws to compare it with One Piece. These "flaws" that were once unnoticed become exposed and blown out of proportion and people begin to come up with this idea that "Attack on Titan isn't so great".
That's why we should always say "in my opinion".

AOT does the sort of thing where it throws something at you which your completely in the dark about unti'' it reveals more info later.Whats in the basement ? Nobody has a clue whatsoever about what it could pertain to until a month or two ago
Meaning once again there was no way once could discuss it because no info was out on it
2.How did Eren get his powers
3. Why was he given these powers?
There are all tied in explicitly to question one not a stand alone question that one can ponder these three questions were brought up with nothing to scratch at until the story ITSELF decided to drop more hints ONCE AGAIN that is a HORRIBLE way to dish out a mystery. Many shows just episodes in you can get into all wacjy theories...AOT ? You can't come to any conclusions because nothing tangible in regards to the mystery is avaiable WHATSOEVER.
It doesn't come down to oh i cracked the mystery it comes down to shock value the quality of mysteries presented in this show are as about as good as M.Night shyamalan
A mystery is something we can all ponder and try to figure out (Not completely) but to some extent with what is provided

4.Why was Annie's dad apologizing to her?
yeah what was he apologizing for i know you don't because Aot dropped a scene that confuses you not a scene that adds more depth to whatever theory your working on about the AOT UNIVERSE.you wont find out until more history is dropped which once AGAIN is not A MYSTERY ITS CALLED SPOON FEEDING YOU SHOCK VALUE to create the illusion that shit is constantly happening.
5. Who are the enemy shifters work for
Once again you didn't even know they were working for something until it was mentioned meanin you have to wait until more is revealed because you wont figure it out ...why ? because once again nothing tangible to go off of.
6. What's the secret behind Ackerman?
Indeed another secret maybe if AOT stops pulling a lost where they throw shit out and actually start filling you in people can start discussing the grand scheme of the series
7. What power did Historia's dad's wife have?
Who knows because once again there is no info on it other than that scene where you find out that the dad had a power you didn't know about
Can anyone draw any ideas about these mysteries with whats been presented so far ?
No ?
is it because there isn't anything ?
And these mysteries are just shallow shock placements ?
SnK is good but the character development is definitely underwhelming. I'd say only Armin, Jean and to a lesser extent Historia are well developed characters, the rest of the characters fall more into the ''generic'' trope. Recently the author even admitted that its most popular character, Levi Ackerman, was purposely made generic looking and have a generic personality so to bait the female fans who enjoy male romance.
Agreed but SnK characters in general are no more underdeveloped than is typical in shonen to be honest. Eren is your generic stubborn/unyielding shonen archetype so underwhelming character evolution was to be expected, nevertheless hes still a more interesting and better character than the likes of Naruto, Luffy and Ichigo.

Don't get un-answered questions confused with a mystery.
I am talking about the way they are presented.
Any one of these things can be tied to things they are unwilling to talk about or show.
Half of this shit is tied to the church and the era which are blatantly ignored.
No matter how many questions are circulating if there is nothing other than that question to go on the mystery fails.
take the many shows on reddit that have people creating theories and possbilities where the story might go
You can't do that for aot
because those questions are all you got
That is not a mystery
You can say whats in the basement and that mystery ends there
nothing to speculate because the info is extremely sparse
and half the questions proposed aren't even things people would of ever thought of
The mysteries are a one way street. You reveal something and you have to wait until they reveal more its like someone feeding a bird pouring out a little bit of story at a time in the meantime you have jack shit to compile into a theory.
Something happens another "mystery" pops up (a,k,a,) something nobody understands or can begin to contemplate until the manga drops more info
basically if your mystery is so sparse that people cant come up with a conclusion with until yo provide more answers thats is not a mustery that is a "mystery" battery operated on a one way dimensional track that when revealed will only create shock value and carry no real weight

Objectivity is far from a bad thing. It's subjectivity that causes bias towards something.
And those claims were all coming from people caught in the momentum if we're to be honest. I doubt anyone would have the guts to claim such atrocious things nowadays.
"Tell me something about Itachi that doesn't include protecting Konoha/Sasuke...can't be done"
Your an idiot that is overall plot structure of his story not his personality which i already described
And youll notice i descrived his character contrary to what other characters in the show thought who he was
and they you counter with
"We also know Eren has love for his friends and family as well. "
well i hope he does or he would be just a whiny ***** that gets angry and doesn't love his friends.
itachi did so too,he also loves his family even thought they had opposing ideals but i didn't mention that because that was a given
if you have to poitn out the obvious traits that it only proves nothing else constitutes erins personality other than the basic emotions of humans a.k.a anger sleepy hungry happy
So tell me again what drives erin, who is his character at his core ?
