Why is the English dub so far behind?

It's a hate bandwagon. Lol I admit sometimes some of the dub voices are bad/annoying, but it's okay most of the time. Funny thing is, people wouldn't really know if the Japanese sounds good or not because they are not native to Japan.

Because the dub started a couple of years after the sub came out and it takes some time to license the episodes n such.
