why hiruzen wasnt a the front lines

In the third great ninja which was stated to last a few years, we saw the sanins fight we saw minato fight and also we saw kakashi and obito but the only one we didnt see was hiruzen, if he was as powerful as his hype he should have been at the front lines, that way war could have ended faster instead of sending mere kids to a blody war.

I mean i understand his role as hokage but that didnt stop hashirama to battle madara outside of the leaf, also tobirama died outside of the leaf in the battlefield, in the 4th great ninja war the fact the kages were the head of the alliance didnt stop them from going to face madara.
I mean if he was as powerful as he was hyped to be he could have saved a lot of lives going himself to war, i´m not saying he could have stopped the war all on his own but he could have been a great help.

because a hokage once elected cannot be going on ninja missions anymore, his sole role is to ALWAYS be at the village in case of any attack so that he can put his life on the line to protect the citizens and the infrastructure itself.

No he means, they never suspected the Uchiha clan of anything prior to the Kyubi attack, Obito caused the Kyubi attack, at the time of the war (the time period in question), Obito was just a kid still in Konoha, so the Uchiha weren't a problem
