I sort of expected something like the Starfish episode from Justice League, where Superman had this illusionary life on Krypton, and once he realized it was all a dream he just held his son as everything started to disintegrate.

I mean, these people just got booted out of their utopia, while they now know it wasn't real, it must have hit quite a few snares.

Their deceased loved were alive in those dreams and now their back to being dead. I had a dream like that with my deceased grandmother and awoke up depressed. Yet these people smile about it.

Pretty much. Lol It was also to wrap up the Juubi and Kill Madara whom Kishi admitted he didn't know how to kill. Hence the sage tools spat out, as well as the "Jutsu" that Hashirama gave Sasuke. All were plausible ways to off Madara potentially but he chose this route to cover those three things.

Cartoons are usually more light hearted than animes. Plus Naruto tries to be a deep series.
