This isn't a romance novel. Lol I didn't care too much about the pairings. Well, almost.

But I didn't let those trivial matters bother me too much. As that was not what the ending was supposed to be about.

SasuSaku: One sided up until 700.
Sasuke has never shown ANY form of romantic love for ANYONE. He barely acknowledged sakura, and when he did, he did so as a friend. Let's not forget that 2 times he tried to kill Sakura. This pairing makes NO sense at all.

No arguments here.

NaruHina: One sided up until 700.
We never got any indication of Naruto having any romantic feelings for Hinata. Kishi never showed Naruto getting over Sakura and made it seem like Naruto just settled for the next best thing. It's unfair to hinata, and the fans that she did not get the respect she deserved. There was development of course, but only from Hinata's side. This was Hinat's happiness over Naruto's.

well The Last (The next Naruto movie) is suppose to cover the NaruHina pairing as it was said to focus on this pairing in particular. so before we judge it completely One Sided as you said (and it was) let's wait until we see how this develops in the movie before this becomes an accurate assessment.

NaruSasu: One sided.
Ok let's be real guys. You can't deny some of the subtle hints at homoeroticism that kishi had when it came to Naruto and Sasuke's relationship. But that's the thing though. It was subtle, not clear, and Sasuke was never shown thinking about Naruto the way Naruto though about Sasuke. Anything and everything that may have been seen as romantic love between the two was undone at 699 when they acknowledge each other as friends. Plus Sasuke has tried to kill Naruto as well so...

XD So true XD

NaruSaku: One sided.
I will admit that early shippuden Kishi may have been trying to ship these two, but he later decided against it. Any development you guys can bring up for this can be dismissed as Love between two friends. Besides any development you apply to Narusaku can also be applied to NaruSasu. This pairing stopped making sense after Sakura was revealed to still love Sasuke, Sasuke was gone, and the minute he showed up, Sakura's feelings for him resurfaced. Besides, Sakura was never part of Naruto's dream.

Very True

So as you can see, we never got the development for any of these ships to make sense. The canon ships still make little sense. Granted Naruto and Sasuke got closure on the things they wanted, you still had Sakura and Hinata. After 698 chapters, Kishi found himself at an impasse because he made two characters whose goal was to be with a person, and so by having their happiness depend completely on another person was a bad decision. This is why it Sakura and Hinata are not very well written characters. Kishi either should have started developing the pairings throughout the manga and not just picking and choosing till the last chapter, or he could have provided more character development by showing the characters moving on. The pairings were never a big part of the story, and it's sad that they have caused such a rift in the fandom, when the two main conflicts (Naruto becoming hokage and bringing back Sasuke) were resolved beautifully.

I need to + Rep you for this thread. I completely agree with you. This manga was never about romance, though the little (and I do mean little) there was never really felt fluent or natural. It was pretty much one sided on one or the other's part. There was plenty of opportunity to allow one or more of these pairings to take fruit and blossom but Kishi never really touched on them as much as he should have.

Maybe this is in part because he does not know how to write for female characters.

Kishi is not responsible for his fandom insanity and his manga was never focused on romantic stuff, pairings etc
people are people, they are just delirious and hysterical

I think Mashashi Kishimoto did a great job in the end, completing the story by pairing up the characters and ending speculations. It is common for manga writers with a love triangle story to end it with only speculations and disappoint fans. I was very pissed on the Beelzebub ending(one sided love never realised). I hope Tite Kubo follows on what Kishimoto did and improve on Bleach.

As for the pairings making less sense, I agree. Ino and Sai pairing came completely out of nowhere. I always thought Choji and Ino would end up. But I realized why Kishimoto did that - to have the 'inoshikachou' for their kids. Kishimoto did rush the ending and we never got to see how Naruto finally accepted Hinata's love.

But this is going to be answered in the new Naruto movie releasing December 6th this year in Japan. The story in this movie is in direct relation with the manga and is written by Kishimoto himself. It follows two years after Naruto and Sasuke's fight, and before the pairings happen. The tagline for this movie is: The final story and first love. It is going to be romantic-themed and the first in the series to be. I hope this movie answers your 'pairings' question.

The following picture is from the cover-art of the official soundtrack of the movie.

EDIT: I'm not saying NH and SS were not obvious endgame(though that's debatable), I'm just saying they did not get proper development. Kishi went "oh shit, I have 44 pages to bring a good love story to light. F-ck it I'll just skip 10+ years, because a lot can happen during that time"
Ok so let me start of by saying that I do not support any pairings, so I'm not a butthurt narusaku/narusasu etc. fan.

It's ridiculous how the pairings, which make up like 1% of the story, have caused so much chaos and a massive rift in the fandom. It's actually worse than all that itachi solo god, prime hiruzen stuff. I still don't understand why some people take their ships so seriously. Let's take a look at the top 4 pairings.

NaruHina: One sided up until 700.

Not that i care about her...but what about Karin, didn't she revolve around sasuke too

pairings fallout is kinda weird though...but no matter what we'd have people feeling smug and talking down and a group pissed saying how it should've been.

Kishi did a good job feeding both sides to keep them hooked to the very end.

yeah i kinda agree. I can't even look at the last two chapters as canon because they both are so OOC and different from the the others 398.
that's why I'm very, very, very disappointed about the ending. Kishimoto could simply chose a classic shounen ending: no pairing, just friendship, Naruto hokage, Sasuke as wander or idk, but no ships.
If he really wanted to make a third serie with the children of the main characters, he could have put the pairing shit into THE NEW serie but Naruto should be ended with NO ships and it would have been 10000000 times better :///

You do know that the last movie will be about "the first love" right? If a whole movie doesn't give you enough time for development then I don't know what can.

Actually NaruHina was obvious. In Part 1, Naruto said he liked girls like her. After undergoing intense training to control the Kyuubi, Naruto still went 6 Tails when Hinata appeared to die. When Gaara died... He didn't even break the seal. Also... Since Neji's death, it's safe to say that Naruto like Hinata. Neji's last words included Hinata is willing to die for you and then Naruto held her hand. Naruto was looking at Hinata wheb everyone was getting absorbed by the Tree. He got over Sakura during the war and started liking Hinata... So... It's not one sided

No it was not. It was part of a love square later to be resolved.

gaara didn't try to save naruto. Anybody from konoha would have made naruto gone berserk in that moment.

No it's not safe to say that. You haven't proved anything. You've only proven how benevolent Naruto is because he cares about his friends and family. He never has shown any romantic feelings for hinata. Hell, He hardly showed romantic feelings for sakura.
