the other Kage stepped down too. probably to signify the end of one generation and the beginning of a new one.

Don't forget Tsunade is an old woman and this whole sorted business with the war has probably taken a toll on her both mentally and physically. I suppose it was time to retire much like kakashi did to let Naruto step up.

I thought Danzo was the 6th, so doesnt that make Kakashi 7th and Naruto 8th?
Not entirely. Danzo was never sworn in. He had to go to the Kage Summit as Tsunade was in a comma. He was acting Hokage though I wish he would have been the 6th Hokage. It would have made for some great moments of tension in the series.

Tsunade was getting very old and tired, being involved in 2 (or 3) Wars.
Similar to 3rd Hokage.
Note all 4 Hokages, before Tsunade, die fighting for the Village.

As for Kakashi to be the next Hokage, there was a hint, when he was about to be 6th Hokage.
It will be disrespectful not to appoint him, as he was nearly being appointed. (Kishi like to give hint)

There is one very important hint
Remember what was Sasuke 'revolution' - to kill all the Kages. (another one of Kishi hint)
Therefore, there could be some argument, but at least Kages did respect Kakashi word,
