I honestly wanted to know what made these arcs so special. People constantly go on and on about how great they were, but, I don't see what made these arcs so much better than the rest of Naruto. Hell, I don't see what set these arcs apart from an average shonen manga, so, what was possibly so special about them?

Naruto created his ninja way. It pretty much set the story for the later arcs and character developments

Go re-watch them. It's definitely not nostalgia. Everything about it was epic. During those arcs the manga still had suspense. Kishimoto did a great job showing how fearsome Orochimaru and Zabuza were. The Gaara vs Lee fight was so bad ass, no every fight was bad ass, more relevant characters. How they fought were also cool as well.

I have them in volume form (for sake of chronology) and I don't see what's so special about them. I find majority of the arcs in Part 2 to be better, the only thing unique from the Chuunin Exams Arc was Gaara.

This was during Kishimoto's peak when he stuck to his theme and was good at writing. The Chunin exams were all about tactics. This is why the written test, forest of Death survivla, Preliminaries, and the final rounds were the best moments in Naruto. The Sasuke retrieval arc comes next and any thing in between comes after.

Unless you like overpowered battles with screaming and throwing nukes then it makes sense for people to like the Chuunin exams.

They were one of the first.

People grew up watching those and had no expectations really.

naruto and sasuke actually trained for their strength.

haku and zabuza forced naruto and sasuke to use tactics and sneakiness to catch a superior opponent off guard not just get wrecked and then get a bullsh*t power up.

in the chuunin exams we got to see all the teams showcase cool ninja skills like kibas team using hinata and shinos skills to set up a trap for other incoming teams.

basically what made it good was that naruto and sasuke didn't just win because of plot and bullish*t asspulls. they actually had to work for it and they got beat to a pulp a few times trying to achieve their victory. just look at this crap manga now! naruto has been fighting for 2 days straight and barely had a scratch on him and was just constantly giving out enough chakra to protect and heal every shinobi in 5 freaking nations like wtf? and even if you say it was kurama building up chakra and healing him what happened to the whole rapid healing after damage was bad for him? what happened to this little thing called fatigue? what was the freaking point of the SA? they didn't do jack sh*t the war was fought by like 10 individuals everyone else was just there for hype

I also forgot to include that everyone was actually relevant.

>Shino versus Kankuro
> Temari stomping Tenten
> Gaara and Lee
> Neji and Hinata

No one wants to see two reincarnated aliens soloing the NV with a Chidori and a Rasengan. That's boring as hell.

For the fact that we knew the main characters wouldn't die, I wouldn't say it was really suspenseful, and I easily foresaw how most of the fights would pan out before they began, he only one that surprised me was Shikamaru's fight. Lee's fight was great, sure, but there were other good battles, in fact, I'd say Either Naruto vs Sasuke fight was better. I never liked Orochimaru anyway, not like I did Pain and Obito, he was basically just a twisted snake themed child molester, with seemingly no reason to be evil.

The writing was just great. Everyone was relevant, the power scaling wasn't ridiculous, characters were beginning to develop, nostalgia, suspense, all that. Dude, the build up during the chunin exams was just amazing, and to see it all explode and have a mini war break out showing off Kage level battle (which was impressive at the time) while at the same time the MC was fighting against his foil in order to prove his nindo. That was the pinnacle of great writing in this series imo. Not to mention the great fights in between. Was really exciting back then, and I still think Oro vs Hiruzen is top 5 fights in the series.

However the Sasuke Retrieval arc was my favorite in the series. It was so simple, yet amazing.

Being as Naruto and Sasuke are he main characters, they completely won because of plot. Also, outside of gaining BM, Naruto had to train all throughout Part II (can't say the same about Sasuke).

Something's wrong with you. I suggest you go to the Doctor's and get checked... Orochimaru was menacing. Obito, although he is my favourite could not put fear into anyone. He was so predictable (but enjoyable) after the reveal. The Pain arc was amazing as well but not as good as those two arcs, imo.

No, the part two fights were barely interesting.

Well, I suppose it's based on which characters you like, and not much else. I've always been for Naruto and Sasuke, and thought the rest of K-11 to be, more or less, a waste of time. Also, with the idea of Naruto fighting his foil to prove his nindo, he was doing he exact same thing during the Ten Tails Revival Arc.
