Orochimaru was most mysterious villain , nobody know anything about him , one of best villain's probably in series . In latest arc villain's become predictable , tnj'ed or defeated very quikly . Orochimaru hold everybody in suspense almost whole part 1 .

actually i would say that was tobi. we didnt know anything about him until the war arc. we just found out he was obito and he posed as madara, someone who also was more mysterious than orochimaru. we literally knew nothing about him until recently. as far as mysterious, its tobi but orochimaru is the best villain

Well he was the 1st of the Sannin we met in the Series so in that respect alone he should have been held in high esteem. I agree. Everyone thinks he has turned good but I don't believe it one bit.

Ever heard of the term "Snake in the Grass?" I think in one of these series of final movies Orochimaru is going to make a play for Sasuke's body. This time it will be a fully recovered Orochimaru VS a Sasuke who is fully capable of dealing with him now.

yeah but Tobi was funny character at beginning , on other side Orochimaru was pure evil .

I agree in this. Pain is number 2 in my favs list under Kakashi. But he wasn't mysterious as the OP said. We knew where his rage and hatred came from but that doesn't take away from his awesomeness.

He reminds me a lot of Magneto another favorite villain of mine.

He lacks juice, wanks itachi and is more creepy then evil.

I like his attitude but he aint villain.

Not really, the only obscure thing about him are his motives, and that has been explained as well.
He's an orphan who lost his parents in the war. Inspired by the 3rd and white snakes who shed their skins, he decided to find the forbidden jutsu to make himself immortal, and each himself all the jutsu's there are, most likely because he never wanted to experience war the way he did as a kid.
He only turned against Konoha, after the 3rd denied him as candidate for Hokage, followed by the 3rd discorvering him developing said forbidden jutsus.

The rest is history.

The most mysterious IMO would be Kakuzu, all we know so far still, is that he's a bounty hunter who fough Hashirama.
