Rasengan is a jutsu which sort of "explodes" whatever it comes into contact with and since Chidori is a cutting technique, it forces Rasengan to release it's energy which also takes the concentrated power of Chidori with it.

The rasengan works by drilling and consuming whatever is in it's path, while the chidori pierces whatever is in its path. When these two collide the chidori pierces the rasengan but the rasengan consumes the energy of the chidori, greatly expanding it. But because the rasengan was pierced, it loses stability and explodes.

This is the reason why massive explosions like these occur when these two formidable jutsu collide

It was a basic rasengan, and it created similar damage to what odama rasengan did.

Seems like it was just for the sake of fancyness,

What he said.
Also, remember the Chidori/Rasengan clash of Part I?
That was huge too
