For one, he did use the Rinnegan to absorb Justus but I think that was once.

Second, he may not have relied on that but without Wood Style or Edo Tensei he wouldn't stand a chance.

All that time he wasn't serious, the moment he brought out PS is when the Kage's were scared and he have his fan that reflects jutsus so dust release hitting them right back and only A being fast enough to dodge it. Edo Madara used a katon blast that was huge and took KM Naruto powering up everyone's chakra cloak to protect them and Choji said they would be roasted if it wasn't for Naruto. Alive Madara's stats are all higher than Edo's.

Alive Madara is really durable, he took hits from Shukaku's and Gaara's sand and wind comined and hits from all of the Bijuu's tails. He is also fast enough to blitz SM Naruto and Sai to problem which made Hashirama say Madara got his old powers back. Madara can literately go straight PS and slash Tsunade, Mei, Oonoki and Gaara down while A is fast enough to side step it and maybe save Oonoki if he's on his back. We saw Madara go Susanoo on Hashirama in the war so if he saw the Kage's as a threat then so would he.

Plus Madara never used a faction of jutsus he most likely have gain from growing up in war.
