So recently I posted on a forum (i don't think it was this site, can't remember) and I asked for good comedy/drama manga to read (I usually only read action or shonen manga and wanted to try out something not violence related).
I also wanted something not very well known. I got 3 recommendations, and i just finished the first one, and i have to give a review:
The name of the manga was "kono s o mi yo"
The premise, I went in without any knowledge about what this manga was about. It turns out to be a romance one (to which i made an audible groan. I had read the beginnings of handful of romance manga that were mainstream and they were very bad). But i promised to read it, so i did.
the premise: This 20 something guy who works as an apprentice in a bakery has this mark on his body. He's embarrassed of it so he never shows it, but he soon realizes that it makes women irresistibly attracted to him if they see it.
thats about all the plot i'll get into. There's some girl that he loves, its a back and forth trying to get her while he also contemplates if he should use his power etc.
The drawing is actually quite good. Its drawn realistically. Lots of detail. Sometimes, i have difficulty getting into those ones because they're hard to follow, but the panels are organized well, its clear who's talking and whats happening at all times.
The plot: I actually love how their is a good balance of mystery (where did he get this mark etc) yet not leaving you in the dark. Things come across very naturally, don't feel forced, and just enough is "discovered" to keep you interested. Some things come up later on (how his parents died when he was younger) and it does a great job with waiting a good bit before introducing this. you never feel overwhelmed with plot. The pacing is some of the best i've ever read in manga of ANY genre
There characters all seem unique, have realistic personalities. They're engaging, and you care about them a lot.
Here's the thing: this is a very ecchi manga. Its not hentai, but there is very much nudity. However, its again paced EXTRAORDINARILY well. You don't see nudity for quite a while, and its not of any main characters.
There are characters you assume will NEVER seen naked bacause its like 50-60 chapters in, then they'll ease into it, until BOOM there's just tons of it. Essentially, they are very subtle about it, but they make you wait, but definitely don't leave you hanging.
I am mixed about nudity in manga, but considering the sexual nature of the plot (the women lust after him when seeing his mark until they sleep with him, and the lust is gone) so its necessary. As far as nudity and *** goes, its extremely well done. Just wanna make this clear: there are boobs, butts, and IMPLIED genitals. But they go more and more sexual as the manga progresses.
Anyway: unfortunately, only 86 chapters were translated. I think theres 100+ chapters and i don't know if they'll be translated
BOTTOM LINE: Great plot, tasteful nudity, best pacing i've ever read in manga, believable and dynamic characters. Enough mystery in the plot to keep you wondering, and interested, without 1) Getting too complicated as many manga do with their plot or 2) Not giving you enough substance. They strike a great chord.
I generally don't like romantic manga, especially with a sexual twist because its almost ALWAYS poorly done. The manga really eases you into it, and most importantly, not every girl has ballons for boobs.
I recommend this manga, but caustion: the manga isn't completely translated, and part of me thinks it never will be. So get ready to be overly invested in the characters, only to not find out how it ends
Also if you're worried about something thats kind of a spoiler, but not really, don't read this criticism:
I'll read the other 2 manga later, but this one: Read if you like a good story with some sexiness.
Again, its "kono s o mi yo"

There's this guy at some point who tells this girl, he won't give her grandma medical treatment unless she marries him. But he knows she loves this other guy. And he's cool with it. BUT WHAT DOES HE GET OUT OF IT? i he knows she doesn't love him. It just bothers me. I don't know if its explained later. so be prepared for that to frustrate you
