I never understood them, honestly it was so vague that I didnt even try as I was pissed off. Now after rereading numberous times this is my conclusion:

Basically Hashirama says this: Madara once told him that if there is ever a way to immortaility they would exchange cups and become brothers. But since that didnt happen and theyr dying according to Hashirama, he then proposed exchanging cups as comrades and not brothers.

Madara then refused to exchange cups as comrades, strongly focused on the word comrades.

I believe the reason why he refused is, because A) he found a way to immortality and B) he's not dying.

How many times was Madara described as immortal in the manga?

If Im wrong about the meaning of those last words, please do care to explain, because maybe Im wrong.

For the ones who still dont understand look at the keywords such as Brothers, comrades and immortality. Its also important to understand that Hashirama is the one who thinks theyr dying.

I think that you're looking too far into it. But, anything could happen at this point. :|

I think what it really means is, Hashirama is basically saying "Let's reconcile and close this ***** once and for all", Madara basically responded saying "Yeah, you won, but...go **** yourself anyway". That's what I took away from it.

Even in death, Madara stood with his belief. But he dead, Hagoromo wouldnt have said, "Listen to the final words of those who came before you" to sasuke and Naruto.

It's pretty simple.

Madara told Hashirama , that if he ever found immortality, they should share, and exchange cups as brothers.

-I believe he means that literally, that if eithor becomes immortal- they should share that immortality with one another.
Remember, when madara was revived, he said that he wishes he told Hashirama how to revive himself.
- this shows their bond, that they would not want to live without each other. I'm fairly certain Hashirama would be in madaras IDEAL world.

At deaths door, Hashirama tells madara that he didnot find immortality, so he is unable to share cups as brothers, so all he can do is be a comrade.

Analysis: both madara and Hashirama found different answers to death. Hashirama found "immortality" in the will of fire, his ideology that was passed down- however the world is going to change ( eithor because of naruto or Sasuke ). Madara found immortality by amassing power and control. However, that didnot work eithor.

The point about sharing, and becoming brothers is that if eithor found a answer to death( cycle of hatred, war etc..) they would share their answer with the other and become brothers ( work together for same thing )

Hashiramas point about them dying and it being too late is that, neithor found an answer- and they don't have any more opportunities to find it. - so, he cannot share his ideology with madara - because it is flawed in some sense,- all he can do is offer comradeship.

Conclusion: if Hashirama or madara found the answer to the shinobi worlds problems they would share the answer with each other and work together as brothers, however in death, Hashirama admits that he didnot find it ( the answer) - as a result, he acknowledges that neithor he nor madara were right- fortunately, since neithor was right, and if both admit defeat- then they can stop being enemies and work together as comrades.

@ OP

Are we reading the same manga? How do you
Know madara rejected Hashiramas offer to be a comrade.

He said " Well, if that's how it is, then I won't ...."

- he never finished his thought, so we have no idea. He could mean i won't be comrades or I won't fight anymore who knows?

This is another good possibility, but duo to so many things indicating Madara might return Im going to stick with my theory.

We are reading the same manga, the only difference is that Im showing everything that is related.
Maybe you will understand now

Hashirama: So the only thing we can do now is is to exchange cups as comrades.
Madara: Comerades huh? If thats how it is I wont...

He wont exchange cups as comrades, only as brothers because he found a way to immortality and will not stay dead as usual.

I will also look deeper in your theory when im back home.

Pretty sure he was gonna say if that's how it is I won't complain, nothing I read implies that he has immortality.

Its true there is a possibility Madara didnt finish his sentence which would be freaking ridiclious for a badass character like him to have those final words, unless ofcourse he finishes his sentence later on. ;)
In any case my theory is the most plausible one.

I think your looking too hard into it, he didn't finish his words because he died. Not because kishi intends to bring him back for the umpteenth time. And no at this point in the story madara coming back is all but impossible at this point, he serves no further purpose.

No...no it isn't...it's the least likely...this is the final battle, Naruto vs Sasuke, Madara was already going blind when he died, comrades and brothers were interchangeable, it was to portray a message about the incarnations of Indra, in that, even as he lay dying, Madara still told Hashirama to go **** himself, foreshadowing what Sasuke would do next, the dot, dot, dot was because his sentence was trailing off, because, again, he was dying. Madara is dead, he is not going to return, and bringing him back would be really shitty writing.
