[Discussion] Is excessive gore really necessary in a manga?

As the title says. I hate it when an author uses way too much gore in his manga. Feels unnecessary sometimes, except for Berserk. Berserk is an exception. Take Death Note. It had literally no gore in the manga, and still it was successful. Sometimes, it feels like the author takes the route of violence if the story isn't going well, just purely for shock value. What are your opinions?

Depends on the setting in which the gore is invoked. Gore isn't really necessary when in a shounin battle, but if you have gore placed in a horror setting, some people really do feel the psychological horror in that mood, and it may enhance the feel.

What an extremely biased post .

OT : If it fits the atmosphere of the story then nothing wrong with it , I don't believe in shock value , people just say that because they can't take that type of atmoshpere, if it's not your thing is not your thing.

Death Note never needed any of that , that was not the atmosphere of the story .

It gets boring very fast if used consecutively, but it can be a bonus when the death of a character is very sudden and unexpected.
Shock value is all about timing and moderation imo.

How I am being biased?
Trust me, I've read the goriest mangas till date, and it was obviously difficult to digest the amount of gore in the start.
Well, Death Note could've done with a little gore. Would add to the darkness of Light.

It did fit the theme, given it was all about ghouls and stuff. Donno about AoT, haven't watched it.

Well, part 1 had the right amount of gore. It was perfectly done. Kishimoto should've stuck with that.
Part 2 had rarely any light moments, and I did enjoy Hidan's sadism.
Imo, the 'gore' should be realistic. Not overdoing it and not showing blood at all are two different extremes.
Obito's bloodbath was perfectly done too.

It depends on the genre and demographic. If the story is a shounen centered more towards 10-14 year olds, I wouldn't expect there to be much gore, but rather friendship and all of that good stuff. If the story is a seinen centered more towards 18-24 year olds, then gore, depending on the setting, would be completely appropriate and acceptable.

Well, part 1 had the right amount of gore. It was perfectly done. Kishimoto should've stuck with that.

True, i really don't know why it was reduced in shipuuden. Yeah, that Obuto massacre was one of the highlights of the manga, if gore was missing from that, the impact won't have been the same

I agree with the points you provided, OP.
I despise it when gore is solely used to add "Epicness" to the scenes and isn't really necessary for the plot, or when it is used to attract a large base of audience when the story itself is week/ underwhelming.
And as opposed to what many would think, it doesn't have anything to do with not being able to handle blood/gore scenes, it is only a matter of preference for me.

I agree with berserk it just sound how fits... doesn't mean it doesn't make me naustious at times...lol but when its used as part of the story... to add emphasis then its fine. When its used as a shock effect, or it is the focus (New judge dread movie comes to mind) it just becomes appalling

In overall internet traffic, AOT did slightly surpass OP while it was airing last year. However like all manga, it was crushed by OP's sales.
(Though in terms of internet traffic, OP isn't the highest search of manga titles, that honor goes to Naruto, just throwing that out there )

OT: It honestly depends on things like the genre, the situation in the story, and much more. Take the horror genre, I'd say it would be close to impossible to make something horror related without going all out once or twice. Plus, at least in anime and manga, there are few cases in which studios and mangakas go over the top with their blood, gore and stuff (unless it's for good reason, like moments in FMA or AOT). I'd actually go as far as saying that at least in anime, the industry censors out gore more often than not.
