I'm not a Sasuke hater - he's one of my favorites. I didn't want to see another Naruto vs Sasuke, but it's not my story.
If I remember the Itachi scene, it WAS a way to get Sasuke out of the way so Itachi could get to Naruto.
So yes, it's similar: to get someone who is obsessive out of the way without killing them.
It's another one of Kishi's examples of the cycle repeating itself. Itachi thought hate would help Sasuke grow stronger and Sasuke thinks hate will help Sakura get stronger and move on. The cycle will keep repeating itself until Sasuke admits it doesn't work. Itachi was able to admit that what he did to Sasuke was wrong. Until Sasuke realizes that too, it will continue.
