I've been wanting to get into the one piece manga for a few months now, but whenever I make an effort to, I get intimidated by the 700+ chapter count. I used to watch OP back when it was on Toonami and have a heavy understanding of the series. I've watched OP all the way up to the point where Luffy was going to go see some lightning guy with uber long ear lobes.

Where do you think I should start reading the manga, because I'm not trying to start at chapter 1? I don't want to skip anything that is amazingly critical, but I don't to take a year to catch up.

I suggest you read all of it because that is how OP works, if you skip anything you might not fully experience a future arc, just take it slowly, it's not a race it's entertainment, i fyou read Harry Potter you don't skip the first two books because than you have no idea what's going on

But if you are adamant about not reading it all read the Romance Dawn Arc, Arlong Arc, Loguetown Arc, Reverse Mountain Arc (all very short) and than read everything from Drumm island onwards (Alabasta, Skypiea, Water 7 ...)

If you call Enel a lightning dude with large earlobes, you should just read everything from the start. I recently re-read the manga again (note, re-read, again) and it's still as impressive and emotional as the first time, years ago. It's very worth it to invest your time in reading One Piece, from the start.

I think you should start reading from the first chapter itself. I was in the same situation as you. Read 40-50 chapters everyday and slowly catch up to the current chapter. Reading them continuously actually helps you connect one plot point to another, since the previous chapters are fresh in your mind. Although, the manga scans for several hundred chapters are meh..if you're patient you will love the series. Believe me, it's one of the best shounen mangas ever.

If you wind up enjoying OP, it's really worth it to start from the beginning.

At least watch everything from episode 1, and once you get to where the end of the anime, just continue with it from the manga. It's easier to skip through the episodes too but still understand it as a whole

I watched untill Skypeia then got "bored" because I was impatiant and stupid and skipped tons, and regreted that hard, then I red everything I missed to the pont I can watch the anime in hd, don't skip any chapter/canon episode, its worth it!!!
