everybody but you seems to understand a literal war took place and not a "competition". It's not me failing to understand something, it's actually you. But the one you refer to is the one BZ refers to, which is for ninshu leadership that was given to ashura by sage and its only then indra got pissed and waged real war as sage confirms twice U_U
Thus war BZ mentions is merely competition for ninshuu.
