The whole Manga is awesome. Many characters are unique and the fights are the best i've seen so far. I only refer to the main character

The reason ppl like Naruto is that fact Kishi tries to create characters that his readers can relate too. Which is a broad spectrum of readers. So ppl like Naruto because they can relate to him. They see something in him that they admire. Its the reason his and Sasuke's manga type personalities get rehashed sooo much. Because those two a/b personalities reach the largest group of readers. I'm sure we all know individuals that follow manga's heavily that act like Sasuke and Naruto in some way.

the difference between luffy and goku is that naruto had a tragic past where he had no friends, family, and everyone hated him, was the underdog of all his peers, and one of his ultimate goals is to end the cycle of hatred and achieve a thing called ʻtrue peaceʻ.

Luffy and Goku donʻt share that with him, they donʻt share a childhood where everyone hated them, and they donʻt share narutoʻs ultimate goal. Goku fought for good many times, but when the world wasnʻt being threatened by some massively powerful entity, peace was never on his mind, it was training to become stronger. Luffy differs even more, he doesnʻt give a rip about things like world peace, heʻs only concerned with his own personal goals and the well being of his friends.

Sure the protagonists share things like being lighthearted and goofy at times, but there are huge differences between naruto and those two. Plus, how is naruto a typical-fun-of-the-mill main character just because heʻs similar to goku and luffy? Thatʻs just 2 shounen mangas, I fail to see how 2 mere mangaʻs have created the standard for whatʻs defined as a typical-run-of-the-mill main character.

Maybe because some people find him relatable, some people (like me) know what it's like to feel invisible, to be an outcast. And some of us felt like as Naruto grew, so did we. Naruto, to me, is what many great heroes are, he's relatable.

Also, he's not so run of the mill, he is an all-loving hero, but that's not the same as being generic. Unlike many all-loving heroes, he has struggled with hatred, and for most of the series has been burdened by anger, he even ultimately fought Pain as much for revenge as it was to protect his village. Also, Naruto eventually does grapple with big questions, such as, how do you find peace for the world, is there a solution to hatred, how far are you willing to go for a friend, etc.

If anything, I don't see him as that much like Goku, if anything, he's closer to either Aang or Luke Skywalker, but I don't find him generic.

I dont want to troll. But i often ask myself why ppl like Naruto Uzumaki.
I really want to like him, that would make the manga much more interesting to me...

But imo he is the typical run-of-the-mill main character: --> often silly, sometimes stupid, always hungry, highly motivated, with the wish to protect his friends and to achieve their one real goal.

We already saw that: e.g. Son Goku and Ruffy have all these characteristics too!
But Ruffy is much sillier than Naruto and his look is more special. And Son goku loves to fight like Madara, which makes him badass.

So is there anything that makes Naruto Uzumaki special?

Edit: --> good answers so far:
1. Naruto is a bit perverted (sexy jutsu)
2. I like Naruto cuz he really grow as character unlike Goku and especially Luffy --> by Spacey orange

I like his character, sexy no jutsu = best jutsu.

He's a cool kid, he just had a rough childhood. Comprende amigo?

Exactly, if anything, Naruto is unique in that, he's not only looking for immediate peace, he's not just trying to save the world until the next bad guy comes, he wants long term peace, he's trying to change the world as well as save it, even before the War began, Jiraiya charged him with finding the path to peace, or at least reform.

Not when it's life or death. He likes to spar.

Madara is just insane, he likes to feel pain and blood. Goku is nothing like that.

Most manga characers are the same. Yet people still enjoy those characters.
The thing is, there is thousands of years of literature and stories, there are millions of heroes, it's nearly impossible to make one that's totally original.

This is what a surface level complaint looks like.

Naruto has evolved far beyond any of these clichés. He's a flawed, conflicted, hopeful, determined, highly likeable, inspiring and selfless badass. That's why people like him.

Exactly, so when people say you hate Naruto because he's just like every other character....then it's obviously not true since the characters like Sasuke and Itachi have been done before as well.

I also find it insulting Luffy is put on the same level as Goku when he is the most blatant copycat of Goku ever.

We knew Goku was an idiot because he simply didn't know better, he was just an isolated kid that grew up in the mountains without any contact with the rest of the world. Luffy's stupidity is imposed entirely by the author with no reason other than just because.

Exactly this. I always like that about him. To emphasize with other people. I also liked how he was a real underdog of his entire class and then had to work harder to get to where he is right now.

Good points, I never thought about that. I still prefer Gokus character, but I understand your point.

I think the way Gokuʻs character has been portrayed by Toriyama is better than the way Narutoʻs character has been portrayed by Kishimoto, but if you take them both out of the manga and just think about their ideals and stuff, I think Naruto is a better hero.

Plus, itʻs kind of unfair since throughout most of the manga and all of DBZ/GT, Goku is an adult, heʻs had a lot more time to mature than Naruto has, and unlike Naruto, DB is shorter and not centralized as much around Goku as the naruto manga is around Naruto. So if you can seperate the character from kishiʻs attempts to ram narutoʻs ideology/reasoning/history down the readerʻs throat on so much occasions I think itʻs possible that you might gain more appreciation for the character.

It's true, Naruto is a better hero imo too. But I'm no fan of the complete nice guys with perfect morals. Sometimes I prefer to kill the villains instead of Tnj them, but i know, Kishi wants to send a message with his Manga and Narutos character fulfills this purpose.
I'll probably never become a Naruto fanboy, but I think I understand now why ppl like him and what makes him special, and that was the purpose of this thread. ;)

+ I can sympathize with him a bit better now and I'm much more excited about the upcoming battle ;)

i enjoy Naruto's whole character.
him being a good-for nothing, who only wanted attention and fame, growing into caring for those people who once shunned him.
the way his ideals oppose what should be done sometimes(kill or not kill), i always liked characters that live in a dark world and refuse to be changed by it.
i love the fact that his power isn't some sort of autobody transformation like generic shounin heroes, more of power of the people who helped him and trusted him with it.a power that didn't come from nothing
i love his tnj, it inspires me to see the world from another perspective, not downright judge people as evil, but judge them as a whole result of the way their life turned out.
i love rasengan it's pretty innovative attack a centered rotation that grinds the surface it touches(maybe because i love physics a lot and it seemed like a logical jutsu from its creation to the way it harms, but kishimoto blew a good chance to develop it.
i love the fact he's not perfect,he's dumb, silly, sometimes(most of the time i mean) annoying, but these traits that strayed him from the common sector of cardboard mary-sue heroes, who can do no wrong.

Good answer.
I guess that was Kishis intention!
I liked the Rasengan too in the beginning...but we saw it a bit too often imo^^
