[Note: This is by no means a short thread, and I'm well aware of this, so should you not have the time (or attention span), now would be the best time for you to find a different thread - otherwise, to those who choose to read through everything, much appreciation and respect.]
Following the release of the first Ultimate Ninja Storm game by CC2, its sequels (Storm 2 & 3) and spin-offs (Generations & Revolution) have garnered various criticism and praise from gamers. However, unfortunately for us, many of our suggestions have fallen on deaf ears, and though we still continue to fork over $50-$60 every year to get our hands on the newest Storm Title, one can’t help but feel a sense of emptiness, knowing that our wishes are totally achievable on CC2’s part, yet go largely ignored. Having owned and completed every game in the Storm Series, I’ve created this thread to address some of the issues that I and other gamers have come across as we’ve gone through the Storm Series, as well as how I feel these matters should be handled by CC2, before the release of the last Storm game in the franchise (most likely).
[Sidebar]
- Characters will be referred to by their Ultimate Jutsu (i.e. Sasuke [Chidori True Spear])
- “It’s the Little Things” are subsections throughout the thread filled trivial, yet noteworthy findings I've come across in while playing through the Storm series.
1. Story Mode
Concerning the main Storm games, there’s very little that I’ve observed (both personally and through the opinions of other gamers) that needs to be changed; CC2 has done a pretty great job of recreating and retelling the series from a gaming perspective. The boss battles, secret factors, free roaming environment, and additional anime footage and cinematic scenes are all top-notch, in my opinion at least. Only a few things should to be tweaked prior to Storm 4’s release, which would make Story Mode that much better.
1.1 Character Swaps
Quite a few people have stated that while story mode is great, fighting through a good 80%-90% of it with Naruto alone (even with his multiple forms) tends to get boring somewhere around the 50% mark … and I’ve got to agree. As much as you’ve gotta love the spiky-haired ninja for his determination and guts, every once in a while you need a little break from him. Considering the manga lately has focused on Naruto, Sasuke, & Sakura taking on the main antagonists together, instead of using Naruto for every single battle with the others as mere support, how about granting players the option of switching in between battles?
For those who’ve played Storm 3, you’re probably familiar with the Hero VS Legend ‘Ultimate Decision’ that pops up before most boss battles. By initiating a ‘Character Swap’ that operates similarly, players will not only be able play through with a different character, but also gain access to different cinematic scenes and secret factors, which will no doubt prompt them to play through story mode a second or third time, in order to unlock all the different secret factors and scenarios.
1.2. Experience The Dark Side
Ever wondered what it’d be like to be the boss of the battle instead of the underdog? What it’d be like to use Madara’s Susano’o against all 5 of the Kage at once? Or use all 6 of Obito’s Tailed Beast Paths against Naruto and Killer Bee? Of course you have. So why not include the option to do so? Whether incorporating it right from the start of the game, or having it saved as a bonus for completing the heroes’ story mode, I certainly wouldn’t mind playing through story mode a second time if it meant reliving the experience from the perspective of the main antagonists.
2. Characters & Movesets
Here we come to the core problem: characters and their movesets (i.e. Combos, Ninjutsu, Ultimate Jutsu & Awakenings). No need to beat around the bush here, let’s get right into it.
2.1. Adding & Dropping Characters
It’s been generally accepted in the gaming community that once a character has been added, regardless of how good or bad that particular character is, it should hold its spot in any and all further remakes/continuations of that particular franchise. “Always add, never subtract”, in other words. CC2 has done well in the former part of that quote, but poorly at the latter.
Using Storm Revolution as a gauge, let’s look at the list of characters that have been dropped along the series:
- Naruto Uzumaki [PTS – One-Tailed Transformation]
- Sasuke Uchiha [PTS – Cursed Seal Second State]
- Kimimaro [Cursed Seal Second State]
- Rock Lee [8 Gates Mode]
- Might Guy [8 Gates Mode]
- Naruto Uzumaki [The Nine-Tailed Rasengan]
- Sasuke Uchiha [Chidori True Spear]
- Sasuke Uchiha [Flame Control Sword]
Regarding the first 5 characters, their loss is scaled down by the fact that they’ve been adapted into Awakening Modes for those characters, most of them complete with everything barring their Ultimate Jutsu (we’ll get into that later). Concerning the other 3, it’ll be easy for some of you to say, “Well, they weren’t that great to begin with, who cares?” or “Nobody really used them anyway.” However, those opinions are irrelevant. Just because you didn’t find them particularly appealing to use or didn’t come across them frequently online doesn’t mean that everyone else shares your viewpoint. Furthermore, there was no legitimate reason to drop them, so why do so?
Also, let’s look at a list of characters that should’ve been added, but still remain stuck on the sidelines as support characters, or haven’t included in the Storm games at all:
- Kurenai Yuhi
- Rin
- Shizune
- Anko
- Jirobo
- Kidomaru
- Sakon/Ukon
- Tayuya
With the exception of Rin, the characters listed have all had decent spotlight time throughout the series, yet are not available as full characters. This begs the question of ‘Why?’ Let’s have a look at a Shisui Uchiha, a new character released in the latest Storm game, Revolution. Compared to the listed characters, Shisui has had but a fraction of their screen time, yet CC2 was still able create an incredible Moveset, Ninjutsu, Ultimate Jutsu, and Awakening for him. So how much more could they have done with these other characters, who’ve shown off plenty of their fighting styles (which can be integrated into Combos), abilities (integrated into Awakenings), and techniques (integrated into Ninjutsu/Ultimate Jutsu)? C’mon now.
Here’s an example a potential moveset for Anko:
Combos
- Most of them can be designed to include Snakes or a Fire Release Jutsu towards the end of the combo.
Tilt
- Earth Release: Sphere of Graves
Throw
- Fire Release: Fire Ball Jutsu
Ninjutsu
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands OR Fire Release: Dragon Fire Technique
Ultimate Jutsu
- Many Hidden Shadow Snake Hands OR Twin Snakes Mutual Death Technique
Awakening
- Proctor Mode [Standard Attack/Speed Boost]
- Cursed Seal Level 1 Mode [When playing against Orochimaru]
Not exactly rocket science right?
2.2. Combos
There’s not much to say here, aside from restoring the L/R combo, which for reasons beyond my understanding was dropped after Storm 2.
[It’s The Little Things: Combos]
In Storm 1, Itachi Uchiha had an incredible throw, which showed off his visual prowess; however, it was replaced by a rather average throw that has remained all the way up to Revolution. Considering Itachi now has 3 forms [Tsukuyomi/Totsuka Blade/Yasaka Magatama], it’s a shame CC2 didn’t incorporate his old throw into at least one of them (presumably his first form), wouldn’t you say?
2.3. Ninjutsu
One of the features that Storm 1 has always had over its successors was the ability to clash certain jutsu (i.e. Rasengan & Chidori) together in battle. Yet despite its popularity among players, it was dropped. Another feature was the ability to customize jutsu for specific characters – for example, it was possible to equip Sasuke with either [Fire Style: Fire Ball Jutsu], [Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Jutsu], or [Chidori]. Again, despite its incredibly utility, this feature was abandoned, and many players have voiced their hopes of seeing both return one day, and I’ve gotta say, it’d be great to have access to them again.
2.4. Ultimate Jutsu
Another aspect in which Storm 1 outshone all other games in the franchise. In the 15-20 seconds that constituted most Ultimate Jutsu in Storm 1, you really got a solid feel of the power displayed by the characters. However, from Storm 2 onwards, most, if not all Ultimates have been shaved in half, to a measly 7-10 seconds – and don’t get me wrong, many of them are still amazing to watch – but with barely 10 seconds, you don’t have much time to be captivated … merely blinking means missing at least 1/3 of the cinematic. While I understand this is an issue least likely to be changed by CC2, the fact remains that longer ultimates were held in high regard by players, and it’s a shame that nothing will be done about it.
[It’s The Little Things: Ultimate Jutsu (1)]
In Storm 1, Sasuke Uchiha’s Ultimate Jutsu, Chidori Lament, featured Sasuke being partially consumed by the Cursed Seal before ramming into the opponent with Chidori, which was tainted purple instead of blue, due to the corrupting influence of the Curse Mark – however, from Generations onwards, this was replaced by the standard version of Chidori used by Sasuke in his Chunin Exams outfit. Again, why get rid of it? To some it may not seem like a big deal, but it was little things like these that many players appreciated.
[It’s The Little Things: Ultimate Jutsu (2)]
You ever get caught by an ultimate like Sakura’s Full Blossom: Cherry Blossom Clash, then proceed to utterly destroy her with Itachi’s Yasaka Magatama, only to be surprised, and utterly disgusted by the fact that both Ultimates do exactly the same amount of damage? It can’t only be me. In Storm 1, the damage inflicted by such techniques was equal to the chakra required to perform it: for example, Sakura’s Ultimate, The Great Sakura wasn’t impressive in terms of its damage, but it only required 50% of your chakra to use; on the other hand, the Third Hokage’s Sealing Jutsu: Reaper Death Seal demanded 90% of your chakra, and took just as serious a hit on your opponent’s health. Sadly, this mechanic was dropped from later games, though it made fights that much more interesting, as you’d keep your game on high when facing any opponents, since there’d be no telling how much damage your opponent could inflict with their Ultimate Jutsu unless it was a powerful character (i.e. One-Tailed Naruto, Eight Gates Guy), in which case you'd already be cautious in battling them.
2.5. Awakenings
There doesn’t seem to be too many issues with this aspect of the game from what I’ve seen on forums, though I have come across something worthy of bringing up. Certain characters with multiple forms (i.e. Itachi, Deidara) still retain the same Awakening, although they should be given something new. For example, Itachi [Tsukuyomi] could be granted Tsukuyomi Mode from Storm 1, which would fit better in my opinion; conversely, Deidara’s Reanimated form could be given a new Awakening.
[It’s The Little Things: Awakenings]
Whenever you awaken with characters like Naruto, Kakashi, or Killer Bee, it’s easy to notice the change in their avatars; for example, Kakashi’s avatar changes to reveal his Sharingan, while Killer Bee’s avatar changes to that of the Eight Tails. However, when using Sasuke [Susano’o/Flame Control Sword/Blaze Release: Susano’o Kagutsuchi] or Itachi [Tsukuyomi/Totsuka Blade], their avatars remain unchanged, while characters with similar awakenings (i.e. Madara & Shusui) have their avatars changed to their Susano'o. Given CC2 does have a lot to deal with, it’s easy to assume this may have been overlooked … but given this has been the case since Generations, it’s a letdown to know that it's slipped so many times.
2.6. Team Ultimates/Combination Techniques
Due to its novelty, this isn’t so much as a problem as an issue of what other characters should have Combination Techniques by Storm 4; CC2 did an amazing job with this feature; all that’s left to do is expand on it. Here’s a list of characters that should have combination techniques:
- Itachi & Kisame
- Hinata & Neji
- Deidara & Tobi
- Rock Lee & Guy
- Naruto [PTS] & Sasuke [PTS]
- Rock Lee, Tenten, & Neji
- Haku & Zabuza
- Sakura & Tsunade
- Jiraiya & Naruto
- Orochimaru & Sasuke
- Orochimaru & Kabuto
- Naruto, Minato, & Jiraiya
- Gaara & Naruto
- Gaara & Fourth Kazekage
- Sakura & Ino
- Hinata, Kiba, & Shino
- Kakashi & Yamato
- Suigetsu, Jugo, & Sasuke
- Kakashi & Obito
- Ayy, Darui, & C
- Danzo, Fuu, & Torune
- Onoki, Kurotsuchi, & Akatsuchi
- Mei, Ao, & Chojuro
- Chiyo, Kankuro, & Sasori
3. Game Mechanics
The last segment that needs to be covered for the purposes of this thread, the game mechanics. Not a whole lot to get into, just a few things CC2 should take into consideration that will enable smoother, more enjoyable game play.
3.1. Battle System
The new battle system introduced in Revolution, in which players select from Ultimate Jutsu Type, Awakening Type, or Drive Type, is without a doubt a great feature, forcing players to think twice before haphazardly selecting characters to play with. However, as with most things, it eventually gets boring, as players begin to long for the battles where they had access to all three types at once. This can easily be fixed by simple granting players the option of either fighting with the new system, or the ‘all-out’ system, which we’ve grown up with throughout the Storm Franchise.
3.2. Online Features
Through my experiences and observations, one of the biggest issues with the online component is the high occurrence of disconnections … often a result of stingy, bitter players looking to protect their win-loss ratio. In this case, CC2 can either penalize players by counting disconnects as a loss, or revamp its online feature to prevent players from doing anything during online battles (i.e. quitting via exiting the entire game).
There you have it, a general breakdowns of the issues encountered throughout the Storm Series, from my perspective and other gamers alike. To those who actually read through the entire thread, you have my sincere gratitude, and respect – I’m well aware that this is no casual read, especially since most other threads are barely a fraction of what this thread is, length-wise. Feel free to voice your questions, opinions, or things you’ve also noticed that I haven’t addressed.
