A doubt about Itachi..

I like Itachi as a character very much.But I have a doubt about him for a long time.Please correct me if I am wrong.

Itachi had slaughtered his own clan members except his younger brother as his clan had planned a Coup.We all know that he loved his brother,Sasuke more than anybody.
He left the village after killing his clan and joined Akatsuki. Hiruzen had told him to join Akatsuki to spy on their activities.
We all know that this killing of the Uchicha clan was planned by the Higher-ups of Konoha(Hiruzen,Danzo and few others).

My doubt is.. Did Itachi ever pass any intel about Akatsuki to Konoha? Did he tell about the aims of the Akatsuki?Or the abilities of any of the members?? I don't think so.
Why didn't he do his work as spy? Then what was the purpose of him joining Akatsuki??

I think he confirmed Kakashi's suspicions that the Akatsuki was going after Naruto/the kyuubi during their fight, and he might have indirectly given Jiraiya intel via anonymous leaks.(I am completely unsure about the latter though as it was never stated in canon)

I think Itachi being a spy was a retcon, unless he and Jiraiya were actually in cahoots. That would explain who Jiraiya's "inside source" was, although that wouldn't explain why Jiraiya had no intel on Akatsuki's members or plans beyond catching the Bijuus. Hell, Itachi knew Pein had the Rinnegan, so if he was working with Jiraiya, why not share that information?

By doing nothing.

He did nothing in almost 10 years to hinder or stop Akatsuki, nor help Konoha in any way. He went on missions under Akatsuki's banner and sealed Bijuus for Akatsuki. Obito also had no interest in attacking Konoha, he only cared about the Moon's Eye Plan.

Itachi could have passed info to Hiruzen, but after his death he had nobody to pass the info to leaving Konoha (More specifically the now dead Hiruzen) blank about Akatsuki.
