Hashirama's hype was so great, that he would later be seen as a fairy tail. He was the second man to be called the God of Shinobi, only after the Sage himself.
Kabuto stated that there aren't ninjas on his level, and that people thought that Hashirama's power was just a fairy tail.
The only ninja that could defeat Madara was Hashirama.

Hashirama's Fearsome Abilities
As Ashura's reincarnation, Hashirama's prowess was legendary. He was not only the strongest shinobi of his generation, but also the strongest kage to live. Hashirama possessed a unique KKG- the wood release. With it, he could create forests in an instant.
Hashirama used a wood dragon and golem which could stand against both Perfect Susanoo and Kurama.
After gaining SM, Hashirama could also make a giant wood Budha, that dwarfed mountains.
Hashirama was able to bind the Ten Tails.
Additionaly Hashirama had an instant regeneration, without even using hand signs, could summon five Rashomon gates, could make several Bijuu sized Wooden hands, could create a defense strong enough to endure a Tailed Beast Bomb, and fianlly he can even cast Bringer of Darkness genjutsu.
