Anyone been to Japan?

I have been there twice, one short trip and one longer vacation.
Things are COMPLETELY different over there, no seriously TOTALY OTHER WORLD!!. It's not like any place i have ever been to in my life.
Yet, mangas are one of the few things that work in the western world, why?
