Now I am here to explain the overlooked speed of Totsuka! All you need is some basic arithmetic skills and your good to go!
Consider first that Itachi tanked Kirin Via Susano'o Right? Now if you look at what BZ said he said that Kirin moves at 1/1000th of a second... 4 times faster than sound! Now in order to defend an attack you have to defend in time or rather before the attack reaches you. So in order to defend Itachi must have activated Susano'o faster than 1/1000th of a second or he would have been dead as he said himself. So since Itachi tanked it we know he can activate Susano'o faster than Kirin which is about 1/100th of a second.
We know that Susano'o is made of pure CHAKRA! and considering that both YATA and Totsuka are made of the same material... chakra... then it can be activated at the same speed or possibly even faster due to less mass. now that means that if Susano'o can be activated at 1/1000th of a second or less; then Totsuka and Yata can respectively be activated at the same speed... 1/1000th of a second... So all Itachi needs is 1/1000th of a second to activate Susano'o, 1/1000th of a second to activate Yata, then 1/1000th of a second to seal his opponent! That means Itachi can defeat his opponent in 3/1000th of a second! Which is so fast NO ONE can defend!
This explains why it took Nagato(NV's Finest Sensory Nin) a few second to realize he had been solo'd. And also explains why he didn't use Gakido to absorb it... simply because he could not!
