Are you sure? (not saying you're incorrect) But Kisame did state that He was "Not in the Mood for Another Fight", Is this to be assumed that they had encountered something before hand? Itachi was never in a mood for a fight because he was a pacifist. He got his MS when he was 13. The blindness was probably unbearable at the age of 21 and his sickness worsened over the years as much as did his blindness.

Besides his unknown disease, he suffered from the same ailment that Madara did; his eyes were strained and nearing the darkness. When this happened to Madara he was bedridden and completely unable to move, whereas Itachi was able to fight a full-blown battle. That alone speaks volume.
