Stumbled across something interesting on Naruto wiki today.

Apparently these characters was supposed to appear at the start of the manga. They were replaced by Zabuzza and Haku (you can even see concept art of Gato in there). However, they later made an appearance in part 2 as Sabu/Kin, the master enka singer (manga and anime names, respectively) and Ponta.

Ponta was salvaged from an unused concept of a bear-like pet raccoon named Pochi (ポチ). Pochi, together with a character called Kintarō (金太郎), was originally planned to appear instead of Haku and Zabuza Momochi. Instead of Zabuza's Kubikiribōchō, Kintarō wielded a giant axe that was also salvaged for Ponta's partner, Sabu.

Sabu even made an appearance on the volume 50 cover.

I remember seeing some concept art on the wiki of Kishimoto's early sketches of Sasuke, after that his claims of Sasuke being the most difficult to draw made perfect sense to me.

My dumbass actually though him and ponta were gonna be something bigger than all the characters we've seen so far.

He was even on the volume cover./
