No way it's low diff. In a forest, full of plenty of trees, at that distance, Shikamaru can hide easily and start analyzing Suigetsu. Suigetsu is a dumb ass compared to Shikamaru.

You can't use shadow possession on someone that can turn to water.

unless Suigetsu is unaware he is being possessed at that precise moment. Whenever he has turned into water (for example when Karin has punched him out), he saw the punch coming and could respond as so.
