He will become stronger and a bit more courageous, but overall his character remains the same. Although he will stop whining about everything later on in the manga. U_U

Ahh, damn now not sure whether to watch it or not.
Actually i only liked the end and some of the scenes in the mid season of anime
but the manga after where anime stops i liked it and fights were interesting too in manga
and yea though they are rushed/skipped some content specials were good too
so i say go with the anime and start reading manga ;)

its like this for comedy. his masters will suggest some hellish training and then he tries to escape, but always gets caught and does the training anyways. he will never fight a girl and he doesnt fight people for the fun of it. and he only gets serious when his loved ones are in danger. and he will always get his butt whooped in the beginning of the fight and then usually win at the end. theres times when he loses and 1 time when he actually died.

I wrote a review about the manga a while back:

Well rarely a main character changes fundamentally from how he was at the start of the series. Luffy, Naruto, Ichigo... all of them are largely still the same. Kenichi never really lost his completely his timid cowardly nature as that's a part of who he is, however he becomes in the end a dependable strong person. The entire point behind is to overcome such things as cowardice, but not forsake them either as to remember who he really was.

And as why many characters are 'non bad ass with a cool attitude' well it's because, believe it or not, perfect characters are not intriguing. It's one of those things I pity people for who have that urge to proclaim their favourite character as the strongest, most perfect character in existence. It's easier to feel familiar with someone who has flaws rather than with someone who has none whatsoever. Also in Japan an entire generation was inspired by a goofy kid named Goku, so it's no surprise that many characters are similar to him.

If you are going to follow the serie, I recommend to read the manga and skip on the anime, because the anime only covers the first arc and the studio skipped all parts which are referring to the later arcs. Kenichi will always be the gentle person who doesnt want to fight, but he will become the hero type of protagonist.
