A lot of people said it was a sun and a lot said it was a full moon. I think this scan clarifies it

If you look at the top left you notice the symbol is covered in flames. Kinda like a sun. So it is definitely a sun not a full moon, unless you think a full moon should have flames around it.

That was never for sure a moon. I made the argument that the sky was black for stylistic reasons and to bring in contrast which Kishi felt was needed to emphasize it. It was an artistic choice I believe.

*cough* solar flares

are actually known as CME's or Coronal Mass Ejections in which the magnetic fields on the sun become so entangled that when unraveled, they release an enormous amount of energy in the form of particles and plasma

The hand symbol for Zen and Ming is a fist and curved hand representing the sun and moon together and means enlightenment. The thought was that if the Sun and Moon were together there would be no shadows.

Wrong, solar flares are now known to be unrelated to CME's. A solar flare is usually followed by a CME, but not always. When intense magnetic energy is released by the collision of different magnetic lines, the photosphere is penetrated and allows the supers heated plasma of the sun to link with the corona. The particles in the corona are then super heated and accelerated and they release and intense amount of radiation known as a solar flare. Most of the radiation released is invisible to the naked eye and a solar flare is not plasma, but radiation emitted from mainly charged particles such as electrons in the corona. The flare is specifically the radiation. Some plasma may be released in this event from the plasma part of the sun which is known as a CME. CME's and solar flares are unrelated and/or the relationship is unclear but they are distinctly two things. BTW plasma is ionized gases. In the sun, those gases being mainly hydrogen and helium, a solar flare is not made of those gases but rather of electrons and protons releasing magnetic radiation.

Now what I called flames are in fact plasma and technically CME's but if I said that, most people would be confused, so for the sake of clarity as I said before, i left it as flames.

/thread [10 chars]

I don't understand your point, I was not arguing that it was a moon. Many people still think that it was a moon. So I made this thread with mange proof, and while gyaketsu's idea is sound, this manga page proves it.

Yeah maybe, but something to note is that on the moon there is no atmosphere and the sun is surrounded by the black of space instead of the blue sky of our atmosphere. Not making the argument that they were on the moon, but maybe because of Kaguyas moon lore or something, he felt this was okay. It didn't confuse me.

A lot of people did. Don't know why. If you mean this picture, then I can bet someone will anyway lol.

Uh no. The lunar phases are caused by the moons alinement with the sun relative to us. Combining them literally would have the sun destroy the moon. Figuratively it would be a solar eclipse. That is the best you are gonna get away with.

Edit: Actually I see what you are saying because that moon is shaped like a crescent rather than being in the crescent phase. Although I am not sure if the crescent shape is literal or figurative of the lunar crescent phase. Technically though that would kinda be a gibbous solar eclipse.
