First off, howdy. I tend to write theories elsewhere but I thought I'd post a new one here after I saw one I'd written earlier reproduced on this site. I hope you enjoy the new one.
Hopefully the pun in the title becomes clear as you get through this theory. I warn you now that I’m going to go into a lot of detail and a lot of potential spoiler territory. The star for this theory as if you couldn't guess is Oro. I’m gonna start with the assumption that he is the big bad or at least serves the big bad and work backwards showing how he is or could be linked (however tenuously) to every unexplained incident and catastrophe in the manga. I could be making a lot of misplaced assumptions (it'll probably be shot down on Wednesday) but I hope at least some of it explains what Oro is still doing hanging around after being defeated so many times now.
Experiments
Immortality
Oro the Demon?
Some closing points
Enough is enough…. about to open some windows.

Experiments
We can learn something of Oro’s motives in the victims he selects. In the past Oro has selected ninja at random and pitted them against each other until only the strong survive:
By looking at the pattern of Orochimaru’s victims I believe that it is possible to establish a pattern in the way Oro chooses his experiments. Essentially whatever Oro has been up to it revolves around the Ootsutsuki:
1. The Senju - descended from Asura
- He copied Hashirama’s techniques:
- He collected samples of him to raise him as an Edo:
- He tried and succeeded in cloning him (only discovering his success later on):
- He most likely murdered his grandson - unconfirmed:
2. The Uchiha – descended from Indra
Oro tried but failed to capture Itachi:
Oro tries and succeeds in corrupting Sasuke a couple of times:
Oro also had his hands on some of the Sharingan obtained by Danzo from the Uchiha massacre:
3. The Kaguya (the clan not the Rabbit Godess – I’m assuming from the appearance and the name that they’re related)
4. The Uzumaki – cousins to the Senju and by extension descendants of Kaguya
5. Juugo’s clan (more on him later)
6. The Hozuki Clan (Suigetsu’s Brother was called the “Second coming of the Demon”)
7. The Hyuuga – heirs to the Byakugan
- In the middle of the invasion of the Leaf Kabuto was given a special mission:
- That mission seems to have been to gather some samples from Hinata:
Of all the clans that can claim heritage from the Ootsutsuki, Oro has studied all of them. Experiments that don’t tie in directly with the Ootsutsuki do still have links to Kaguya or significant events in the past but I’ll get onto that.

One of Oro’s repeated goals is to achieve immortality. It is why Oro swaps bodies every couple of years. What is suspicious about this technique is how closely it again ties in with the Ootsutsuki and the questions it raises over how old exactly Orochimaru could be.
Up until recently it has seemed that Oro was an orphan to war that was taken in and trained by Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage. Following this timeline it would appear that Oro was tormented by the deaths of his parents and so sought a way to remove himself from this mortal coil. This is the youngest version of Orochimaru we see:
However if Orochimaru is immortal then who is to say that this is the first incarnation of the Snake? We cannot be certain that Orochimaru did not transfer himself into an orphan and masquerade as a child.
I would not even raise the possibility except that there is a figure who looks remarkably like Orochimaru who was an adult before that orphan in Konoha should ever have been born and that would be this guy:
Middle Left:
Stood behind the Mizukage:
Who is that guy? Well we don’t know exactly. What is so significant about him is that he could be the key to the mystery around the Bloody Mist. That meeting shows the first meeting of all the Kage known as the First Gokage Meeting. Every other figure in that meeting was significant. The ones sat at the table were all the first Kage of their respective Hidden Villages and the guys stood behind them are their aids, most of whom went on to become Kage in turn. We know something about most of those figures except for the guy who looks like Oro.
Although we know that Madara / Tobi were behind Yagura, it has never been confirmed how far the Bloody Mist's corruption is attributable to Madara and his plans. If Oro was that mysterious guy then he would predate Madara's activities.
What could have become of that mysterious guy. Well we know that he didn’t become the Second Mizukage because that job fell to this guy:
By process of elimination we can guess that the mystery man became the Third Mizukage and we can speculate that his tenure ushered in the Bloody Mist Era. Really we know nothing about the Third Mizukage or his tenure, we only know that the Bloody Mist Era overlapped with Yagura (the Fourth Mizukage). What is significant about the Bloody Mist Era is how closely it parallels the experiments of Orochimaru both from his days in ANBU and during his reign in Otogakure (the Hidden Sound).
First, Oro has previous on making Ninja fight to the death for his experiments both in the Hidden Sound and in ANBU:
Second we know that during this period many people were killed to study their blood
Third consider the Kirigakure graduation ceremony
At this point it is worth returning to the Hozuki and Kaguya Clans for a moment. Both the Kaguya clan and the the Hozuki Clan hail from Kirigakure and its vicinity. These are two of the strongest clans from that village because of their KKGs (the Second Mizukage also came from the Hozuki Clan). Oro would need strong connections to this village in order to be able to procure such specimen samples.
The Second clue to the beginnings of Orochimaru’s immortality is the ritual itself. It is easy to overlook but Kaguya is not the only one with a personal dimension. Oro has one too. This is where he conducts his ritual. The ritual itself performs a process known as transmigration. This word should be familiar since it is what Indra and Asura are said to have done in passing their chakra to generations of ninja, right up until Naruto and Sasuke.
Kaguya Personal Dimension
Oro Transmigration
Indra and Asura Transmigration
This is perhaps the strongest link between Kaguya and Orochimaru that there is. What remains is to speculate on who or what Orochimaru is and how he relates to everyone else.

Now you may not even be aware that we’ve only recently been introduced to a character known as the Demon or you may think that it is just a reference to Kaguya, the mother of Hagoromo and Hamura, but I consider that it might be someone else and that that someone else might be Oro’s true form.
The first mention we have of the Demon is in regards to Kaguya:
What stands out to me is that it does not seem to be especially demonic behavior to cry. I would therefore draw a distinction between Kaguya, the mother of Hagoromo and Hamura, known as the Rabbit Goddess and determined to stop all wars and a potentially new character or very old one who is called the Demon.
The thrust of my theory is that the story of Kaguya parallels the story of Eve in the Bible and other Abrahamic traditions. Normally Kishi does not borrow from Christian faith (usually he references Buddhist, Shinto or recently even Hindu stories) but I imagine that he has been raised to be aware of Christian stories simply because his twin brother wrote 666 Satan. In the Bible, Eve is corrupted into eating forbidden fruit by Satan masquerading as a snake. I would suggest that likewise here Kaguya ate forbidden fruit at the behest of a snake but that the consequences were somewhat more brutal – namely losing her grip on reality, transforming into the Juubi and being sealed by her own sons.
Kaguya I imagine was once good. If she is anything like any of Orochimaru’s other victims then she was offered a wish before he took possession of her.
e.g. the wish (see also Sasuke)
Assuming that Kaguya was granted her wish (I’m guessing it was either for her two sons or to stop all wars) and that the price was that she slowly lost control like all of Orochimaru’s other containers except she did it on a much bigger scale … the Juubi:
Stop all wars:
Two sons and the Juubi
Having taken over Kaguya, the Demon set about collecting souls. We have recently learnt that IT digests those caught under its glare and turns them into white souls that can be transformed into White Zetsus:
What you might not have noticed is who has a dimension full of these souls…. You guessed it – Orochimaru:
There are a couple more tangential links between Oro, the Demon and other catastrophes in the Narutoverse. I’d start with how convenient it was that Oro had a scroll on how to summon the Shinigami using the scroll and masks from Uzushiogakure – which was mysteriously destroyed:
(NB take a look at the shrine – notice how the Spirals look like Indra's activated eyes and that the three eyes and curtains form the basis of Kaguya’s face – also there are those symbolic flames below the masks)
Second, I’d follow up with Juugo’s clan whose members (mysteriously) were all turned into monsters before they died and that all had horns like the Ootsutsuki and eyes like BZ or the Biju in their monster form:
Third, I would mention how many orphans Orochimaru takes in and corrupts to his will after their clans have been destroyed by events that can be linked in one way or another to the Ootsutsuki. This isn’t out of the kindness of his heart for orphans having supposedly been one himself – they are just test subjects in his effort to find and prepare a suitable vessel (Sasuke):
Oro’s charitable nature
Finally, I’d end by noting the similarities between Oro’s experiments towards the cursed seal mark and Black Zetsu:

So what are the Snakes on a Plane? That’s Oro on his own plane of existence summed up by this image:
What is Oro’s goal? Oro ties in with a couple of religious interpretations of Snake Gods. His name links him to ancient Japanese tales about an eight forked giant snake and to The Tale of the Gutsy Jiraiya. I think this current storyline with Kaguya ties him into the biblical story of the garden of Eden and the Fruit. A little known connection is to Teth, the Hebrew number 9 representing a snake and a tale about the wheel of death and rebirth – this links into Oro’s talk of a new wind and windmills:
He wants a new wind to get it spinning again
Has there been any foreshadowing? Plenty but these are some of my favourites:
What happened to Kaguya
He’s not human…He’s just wearing a human shape
The Killing intent in his eyes is forcing us to see an image of death. Who is this guy?
