Luffy will let almost anyone he’s close friends with to join his crew. If not that, if they’re cool to him, he won’t hesitate on letting them join. He’s asked mummies and even talking trees to join his crew.
However as the story goes on, there seems to be a pattern in a Straw Hats qualities when they join. In the beginning Luffy said that he wants 10 men in his crew. Without realizing it, everyone in Luffy’s crew has 4 main qualities:

- A dream
Each Straw Hat Member has a dream that they want to achieve. Their dreams are the reason they have joined and stayed with the crew. Some of their dreams can be based on gaining knowledge, bravery, or notoriety. Others dreams can be based on finding a certain person, place, or thing. Whatever the reason is, all of their dreams are inspired from a death of someone they idolized or cared for from their younger years.
None of the members will give up on their dreams. They even willing to die to make them come true. However, their determination to achieve these goals does not extend to abandoning or sacrificing their friends to fulfill them.
- Monkey D. Luffy: Find One Piece & become the Pirate King.
- Roronoa Zoro: Become the greatest swordsman in the world.
- Nami: Draw a map of the world.
- Usopp: Become a brave warrior of the sea.
- Sanji: Find the All Blue.
- Tony Tony Chopper: Become a doctor that can cure any disease.
- Nico Robin: Find the Rio Poneglyph that contains the True History of the World.
- Franky: Build the ship that can sail around the world.
- Brook: Reunite with Laboon.

Unlike most pirates who have subordinates that don’t exactly do anything, every member of the Straw Hat Pirates has something to offer to the group. There those who roles that are a necessity to traveling on the ocean such as Nami, Sanji, and Franky. However there are other members that aren’t necessities, but are there for the stereotypical role of their position such as Usopp, Robin, and Brook.

Eiichiro Oda often shows his comedic side giving each of the Straw Hats their very own gag or quirk. These enhance the personalities of the characters to keep the story entertaining and fun; while also to keep the characters from being boring.
- Luffy:
— Asking “non-humans” if they can poop
—Being unable to see similarities that have obvious connections
—Overzealous love for meat (no homo). - Zoro:
— No sense of direction.
— Sleep through anything
— Unties bandages when he’s not fully healed
— Has perfectly timed lines that are dubbed “cool” by other characters
— Affinity for drinking alcohol. - Nami:
—Abnormal affinity for money.
— Cowers in fear and sulk with Usopp and Chopper - Usopp:
— Lies when in danger: “I have 8000 men at my command, ready to take you on!”
— In a series of attacks, he’ll sling a rubber band, “Usopp Rubberband”.
—To avoid going somewhere he’ll come down with the “I-can’t-get-on-that-island disease”. - Sanji:
—Not being recognized.
— Obsession with women.
— He will “burn up” whenever he gets mad. - Chopper:
—He claims compliments don’t effect him while dancing for joy & blushing.
— Being confused for a “raccoon-dog”
— He hides “backwards”. - Robin:

— Cries during sentimental stories
— Takes being called a “pervert” as a compliment. - Brook:
—Tells awful skull jokes
— Reference to a body part (such as his eyes or ears) and will state that he doesn’t have it

Each Straw Hat has a relative (father/mother figure), mentor, or friend that has died some time in their back story. These can either be the causes for someone’s dream or reasons for a Straw Hat’s actions.
