Probably one of the few here to say it, but no, I think the series is fine as it is.
Not everything has to be hard-boiled in order to make it mature or "cool". A "mature" series is not defined by how many gruesome deaths you have or how many of the characters are physically or mentally tortured or how many f**ked up things happen every three chapters.
A mature series is a series that add dark tones, but also add substance to everything dark that happens, whether it be a death or a tragic moment. You can't just throw in dark and gruesome themes willy nilly and have nothing to back it up.
Look at Attack on Titan, a dark tale with death and tragedy, but yet none of underlying darkness feels over the top or pointless. If someone dies in AoT, there's some sort of motivation driving that death, making it matter. If a shocking event occurs, there's reason for it.
Even outside of anime/manga, there are popular series that use dark tones very well (The Last of Us, The Dark Knight) and those who do not use it well or use it terribly (Max Payne 3, Duke Nukem Forever think about how badly the latter uses shock and some dark tone)
