Espadara here, bringing a pretty 'out there' theory. Now just stay with me on this one...
Here he is. Aoba Yamashiro.
Now, Aoba is probably the greatest badass in the Narutoverse. His catchphrase is "Just as Planned". That's pretty important.
Now, what is the point of this thread? Well, it's simple...
Aoba works for the Solo King.
My evidence for this theory? Well, Lets look at a few of the jutsu Aoba knows.

Sure, they know the same jutsu. That doesn't mean much...but I got to thinking, mainly from this quote from Hiruzen.
Itachi, at the young age of seven, was as wise as a Hokage. Aoba may have met him at one point; bird watching buddies? Maybe. But Aoba would obviously be impressed with the young Solo King, and maybe teach him a few tricks, specifically the crow illusion.
Aoba may have recognized the potential Itachi had, and began formulating a plan with the young Uchiha to show his greatness to the world. However...the Uchiha Massacre happened. After pleading to Hiruzen to protect Sasuke, Itachi met one last time with Aoba. Itachi relayed his plan to protect Sasuke. Aoba promised to throw in his support, and may have added in a few points too.
Aoba stood on the side, keeping his eye on Konoha and the Kyuubi Jinchuuriki. Itachi, while in Akatsuki, warned them of Aoba's prowess, to sway them from attacking Konoha for as long as he could.
But after Hiruzen's death, Itachi visited Konoha once more. Not only as a warning to Danzo...but also as a signal for Aoba to begin the 'true' plan. Itachi had to make sure that Sasuke would follow, in order to truly instill as much Hatred into him. Knowing that no responsible Jonin would ever mention Itachi's presence...
Sasuke ran after Itachi, which also had the side effect of Might Gai going as well-Itachi needed to make sure that he and Kisame wouldn't be able to steal Naruto, which is also why he cast a genjutsu on a girl to make her hit on Jiraiya, as a warning to him.
When Naruto comes back after the timeskip, Aoba steps back into the 'Protect the Jinchuuriki' plan. When Hidan and Kakuzu fought Asuma and Shikamaru, it was Aoba who arrived to stop them.
After Itachi's death/suicide, Aoba mourned briefly. He made sure he was selected to go on the Giant Turtle Island to keep watch over Naruto, as Itachi knew that Kabuto feared Aoba above all else.
Aoba allowed Yamato to be captured instead of Naruto, as Yamato did not know the greatness of Lord Itachi-sama. When Naruto and Killer Bee left the island, Aoba allowed them to go, having sensed Itachi's magnificent chakra.
When Kisame was captured, Aoba was the one to interrogate him. But instead of stealing information on Akatsuki, Aoba deleted any information Kisame might've known about Itachi's plans.
When Naruto met with Itachi, Itachi was freed from the Edo Tensei, and thus managed to stop Kabuto and place Sasuke on the right path in one fell swoop.
