Isn't death note kind of popular? the main character is a genius.

It's because stupid people feel inferior to smart people, the same way fat people feel inferior to skinny people or short people feel inferior to tall people. It's safer to make the main character an idiot because more people can enjoy him without feeling like "Oh, he thought of that?? Bullshit! Impossible! I could never think of that so there's no way that's even possible". An even safer bet is making the main cast stupid and his main rival the genius, that way everyone has someone they enjoy to watch. You'll notice that the stupid character and the smart characters both have large numbers of fans and haters.

IMO, stupid characters are mind numbingly annoying. At least if they're funny then that's fine cause i like funny.

Just read through all of bleach and I can say that yea Ichigo's not really a moron. His intelligence isn't stressed, but he seems above average intelligence from the get go. He even scores in the top 20 of his class... Some people might mistake his recklessness for stupidity, but it's not really stupidy, he's just reckless.
