Clearly , hashirama's mokuton is unique to his own and doesn't seem to be senju clan's characteristic.
So either his power was granted because of him being an ashura reincarnation (which is not very likely , as naruto doesn't have it) or
he's just somehow special in his clan (mutation ? lol) or
he's simply not a senju (or not a pure senju).
so , where was he from ?
By assumption , white zetsus contain the genetic codes that contains an ingredient of mokuton , with senju DNA being the other ingredient (you know ,strong life force and stuff , implied when WZ clones become actual wood after reacting with Nardo's yang-rich KCM RS).
Maybe when kaguya (as the ten tails) was about to get sealed , one of the victims of IT , who had already matured into a white zetsu , managed to somehow escape from getting sealed all along (maybe a cocoon fell) .
This zetsu , having wandered for decades , happened to copulate with a senju (female or male) , and thus gave birth to hashirama .
However , feeling embarrassed , the senju decided to toss him over to his/her clansmen , Butsuma Senju (under the pretext of finding him in a river , idk)
Thus , Butsuma became his foster father .
it seems a number of you are quite shocked . Think about it , shinju is wood , which may contain a rudimentary form of mokuton . and since shinju cultivates white zetsus , they should have it too . It fits
