Maybe this has been done before, but for a long time now I have believed that Tsunade might be Naruto's grandmother.

Note that the due to how things are now, it may not be the case. With all the edo tensei, and the whole mess, and the way the story is progressing now. It may also be that this idea is too mature for this series, the series which in fact is a kids manga/anime.

However one thing I'm willing to bet on. Tsunade will die, maybe to protect Naruto, maybe to protect Sakura I don't know. The problem is that she is the hokage, and now when we have soo many hokage candidates she kind of needs to go. And I don't believe that she would step down, that would be cheap.

In the last chapter Obito told Kakashi that he would be the sixth hokage, which sounds reasonable and is probably true since such statements usually are just that. But we also know that the series won't end until Naruto becoms hokage, since dreams come true in the narutoverse. Something needs to happen which makes Kakashi hokage, and soon.

So the theory:

Naruto is in trouble and Tsunade steps in to sacrifice herself or something. She is fatally injured and the battle pauses as they move out harms way/villain runs.

Naruto asks why she sacrificed herself. She tells him a story (flashback time)

Ninja WW2. Tsunade and Dan are happy and in love. But then Dan dies as we know. She is inconsolable, filled with sorrow. More than that, she is pregnant.

After she bears the child she just can't bring herself to keep it. She wants her memories or Dan to die, and the baby is a constant reminder. She also feel like she is in no way suitable to be a mother. She gambles and she started drinking after he died. She feels like a bad person.

She gives the baby to a family that have no children, the Namikaze family. She tells them that the babys name is Minato.

Jiraiya who has travelled the world his entire life decides to finally come home and try to persuade Tsunade to stay. She refuses and leaves. Jiraiya, who has always loved Tsunade, promises her to take care of her child. He applies to Hiruzen to be a Jounin teacher and asks to be the leader of Minatos team. He trains him and sees him as a son, and the child of prophecy.

Tsunade moves from town to town, and hears about Minato's great deeds. When she find out that he died the sorrow grows even more strong.

The flashback ends, Tsunade says "I'm sorry Naruto" then dies.

Something like that. So what backs this theory up then?

- Naruto and Tsunade have great chemistry from the start

- Tsunade kisses Naruto on the forehead, maternally and lovingly

- Jiraiya decides to train Naruto, an fool with no talents. His last student since Minato

-
Also page 11 and 12

Tsunade seems really sad when they talk about Minato, as if she is feeling ashamed as well. She has lost so many loved ones. Why should she look that sad over a hokage who died years ago if that hokage wasn't a loved one as well? Jiraiya says he has no kids but Minato was like a son to him, and Naruto like a grandson. That because he loved Tsunade so much.

- Also, Naruto calls her granny all the time

Nice theory, but it could have been labeled "Chappter810"
Lelz, I can imagine this being accurate, but not likely.

Well it's not bad it's very interesting m8 well this might be true but I highly doubt it
Have any concrete arguments why it's bad? I agree the wording could have been better, but I'm tired so...

He considers her his grandmother, just as he considers Jiraiya his grandfather, and Iruka his older brother. She isn't related directly, but she is family to him, and she feels the same way.

Therefore she should live XD
