Lots of times in these forums, you say someone saying that characters have tanked an attack, or will tank an attack. My question is, what does it mean, to you, for a character to "tank" an attack?

For me, it's when a character isn't damaged by an attack, such as this here

ya that about sums it up. its when an attack doesnt work on the opponent. but its meant in a manner that the attack has 0 effect.

''Tanking'' in videogame terms isn't always to be undamaged by an attack.

Tanking in videogame terms means to be attacked as much as possible and to last as long as possible.
Tanking could also be to receive as minimal damage as possible.

Well, the term "tanking" I believe originated from MMORPG's.

The capability of shrugging off major attacks. That easy.

Tank in my book means eat the attack up.
Like how Nagato wasn't phased by Amaterasu or Killer Bee's V2 Lariat.

Or like how Third Raikage ate a direct hit form Naruto's Rasenshuriken and jumped back up.

Hmm.. I think it means being able to take an attack and still live. And you can receive damage but it wouldn't affect you at all. If that makes sense. Lol

Try to specify how much damage must be taken for it to be considered tanking, like how I see it as 0 damage.

Not in anime/manga.

If someone blows off your limbs and you're still alive for some reason 99% of the people wouldn't consider that tanking.

Well, we aren't really talking anime here then but I suppose I can try to explain it. I played the role of tank in World of Warcraft for years.

Let's assume Bob has 50,000 health points, and Billy does 25,000 damage every other three normal attacks which does 1000 damage.

Bob has....I don't know awesome reflective skin. Instead of doing that 25,000 damage, let's say that skin reflects 75% percent of damage. That means what would've been a strike that halved Bob's entire health pool, instead it's A LOT less damage.

That would be tanking a hit.

Yeah we're talking about in the context of manga/anime.
