[Discussion] Japan's New Anti-Piracy Laws

Just a heads up for all manga and anime fans, they will be launching a new anti-piracy campaign. This might cause delay in reading new chapters or seeing new subbed episodes.

All big sites like ***********, Mangapanda etc. are being targeted.

In cooperation with 15 major anime production companies and manga publishers, the Japanese government will next month start a huge extermination operation against foreign sites which have illegally uploaded anime and manga contents on the web without the copyright holders' permission, NHK reported on July 28th. While the government has started supporting the genre as one of their important cultural exports, there appears to be no end of illegal uploading of anime and manga via pirate sites, mainly operated by Chinese. The Cultural Affairs Agency estimates the loss caused by the Chinese pirate sites last year was amounted to at least 560 billion yen (about US$ 5.5 billion).

On August 1st, the government will start simultaneously sending requests to delete illegal anime and manga contents to the operators of the 580 foreign pirate sites which they have found. In addition, the operation will launch a new site to guide the fans to a legitimate site offering some 250 titles including the latest ones at a cost of several hundred yen.

Update July 30

METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) has published a press release stating 500 manga works and 80 anime works are being targeted, not websites. The press release includes a PowerPoint that contains an actual list of websites they are targeting. Included are scanlation sites (slides 11-12), fansub upload websites (slides 13-15), direct download websites (slide 16), torrent sites (slides 17-18), and redistribution websites (slides 19-20).

I own pretty much all the volumes of manga Iread but the delay (because eng releases are released a lot later) would suck

I also think that a crackdown on manga sites abroad (not Japan) would actually do more harm because if sites like mangast'ream or mangapa'nda didn't exist in the first place (so I could read a manga there first) I would never have bought the 500+ (or however many) volumes I have

I wonder if this could actually work, it also could take quite a while my guess is.
And if they should succeed in closing down manga/anime traffic one these sites new ones could and will always be made which would just result in them having to start over. It's like mobbing with the tap open.
So what plan is it actually they have? Will they sue them or try to make them pay some financial penalty, if that's the case I could see alot of sites closing down on their own out of concern for persecution . Whatever the case I don't mind paying some money tbh.

This doesn't matter Japan will never stop people from getting this stuff free online. The Movie industry couldn't stop it the Music industry couldn't stop it the Comic Book industry couldn't stop it. You can just make it harder but there will always be a way. So ultimately there just wasting their time.
