Which would you choose?

Water Bending - Also allows for Healing and Bloodbending (Under the Full Moon)

Earth Bending - Also allows for Sand Bending, Seismic Sense, Metal Bending, and Lava Bending (After EXTREME training)

Fire Bending - Also allows for Lightning Generation and Redirection

Airbending - ... You can fly and move fast

Earth bending for combat, water bending for general living, airbending for fun and fire bending for tyranny.

I pick water bending.

Airbending

A very spiritual style of bending.

Being able to bend anything light enough to be carried by the wind(any gas, dust, scents, etc), being the fastest form of bending and being able to blow any material forward, this style would suit me the most.

Also, this style is build on never getting hit.

Other than that: Earth.

OT: I think lava bending is fire bending, not? I thought those four criminal are two firebenders, a waterbender and the airbender. Besides that. Avatar Roku did it and Aang used it through him at the summer solstice.

No, it's an definitely an Earth Bending technique. When Ghazan was first introduced, Zaheer tossed him 3 rocks into his wooden prison, which Ghazan later pressurized the Earth and phase-changed it to Lava. Unless he can bend 2 elements at once

I would choose fire bending. I feel like that would suit me the best. Fast and aggressive... yup. And the ability to control lightning is a plus. You can also fly with fire bending like Ozai did, but I don't know if that's only with the power of the comet.

If not fire, I would go with Earth. It's a versatile element and I would enjoy the ability to bend metal and have seismic sense.

Air bending, since it can be used anywhere and wind is my favorite element with fire being the second. Water bending is probably the strongest though.

1) Firebending

No particular reason but for some reason I always favor fire. In our RP system it also has always been my 1st specialty and I have more fire customs than any of the other elements. If I still would need to state a reason, I would say it's the element that has the best balance between agility, offensive capabilities and access to the elements nature.

2) Airbending

Most agile and versatile of all the elements. It allows you to run, jump and even fly like you're a superhuman. If you want to live a ling live, this one is probably the one that will get you out of many deadly situations. The downer is that its destructive force is the lowest of the four elements.

3) Earthbending

In fact my 2nd specialty in the RP, however it has two flaws. If you are not in the present of earth, it's almost useless and unlike with water bringing a few rocks with you will not change much. Both fire and air have pretty much permanently access to their elements, earth and water not. Secondly it's the slowest of all the four elements. It provides in the first place a strong defense. Even though it can of course be used offensively, it just lacks speed. If you're hit with it, you're screwed, but avoiding it is in most cases not that hard. It's for a daily live the most practical though.

4) Waterbending

Just doesn't suit me. Again you need to have permanently water with you as it's not like there are huge water supplies everywhere. Earth at least can still be used most of the time.

Actually in TLA when Roku told Aang about the Avatar State he showed an image of the previous fire-Avatar and he could bend an entire volcano just with his firebending. So firebenders could also bend lava, however logically only if they're really high-level benders and they could only manipulate existing lava sources. Firebenders can't create earth, so they wouldn't be able to create lava.

I think Ghazan's bending is some kind of a variation of what the Combustion Man & Lady do. They focus their firebending eneryg into a specific condensed point and then shoot it away, exploding on contact. I reckon Ghazan does something similar by condensing his energy, making it heat up. That process is similar how lava is created deep in the earth: the enormous pressure creates heat energy melting the earth.

Maybe the avatar was simply using Earthbending? (Enhanced by the Avatar State)

And regardless of how it is done, I did say it's definitely an Earthbending technique if Ghazan did it. We have no proof whatsoever regarding the capabilities of Firebenders being able to lavabend.

Nope it was firebending as they showed the four previous avatars before Roku using all in the Avatar State to bend their elements:

- Yangchen airbending a huge wind the size of a forest

- Kiyoshi earthbending two huge badgermole statues

- Kuruk waterbending a tsunami

- Unnamed fire Avatar firebending a volcano

It wouldn't make sense for the latter to be earthbending. So him doing it was definitely a form of firebending, albeit in the Avatar State. Then again no one will be able to bend an entire volcano, however that doesn't mean a small-sized version of it could be done by a regular firebender (I say regular, though it still would require a high-level master).

So I stand by my previous statement: earthbenders can create lava using their earth, however firebenders are able to manipulate existing sources with their firbending. When Roku and Sozin were battling a volcano, Sozin extracted the heat from lava to cool it down to earth. So using the heat to control the lava should be possible.

Waterbending would be my element. I've always loved the water and the moon is my favorite celestial body. Plus, I love how it can be both helpful and harmful depending on who uses it.
