Back in the old days, this was normal. What in the hell ix happening to this world?
i can understand people getting married if they are 5 years apart but people getting married if they are 59 years apart then that's where i draw the line.

"People keep asking will they live together, sleep together, have babies, but I keep telling them that after the wedding, everything went back to normal –- nothing changed," she said. "All this ceremony is for making ancestors happy. We are playing.”

I don't know if anyone posted this, but yeah. Learn to read the article.

Where they marry a horse? Why is it ok to marry a horse but not a dog? Are you racist against dogs? :p

It says in that article:

The second ceremony took place because the boy wanted to make it "official," though members of both families made it clear that the marriage was not legally binding, the pair do not live together and, as the Independent reports, they don't have sexual relations.

"People keep asking will they live together, sleep together, have babies, but I keep telling them that after the wedding, everything went back to normal –- nothing changed," she said. "All this ceremony is for making ancestors happy. We are playing.”

Yeah.. Most of these marriage under traditional customs are symbolic only. Similar is the case with the guy's marriage with a dog- a superstition where they believe it will ward off some evil /sin.

Well there were many someone married a goat in Sudan.- that one was probably a shotgun marriage since he was caught in the act of fornication with it.... :|

I got bored. *shrug*

is't sin just another word for crime?

Traditionally I have heard of such marriages with Dog/tree/clay pot only to ward of evil .. Like some soothsayer told that "this kid will be an early widow/er in first marriage or affect him/her negatively" the family may marry her/him to a clay pot break it up and thus get rid of the curse and now the girl/guy can marry another without that stigma or scaring future suitors in the tribe/area. Marriages with tree are often when they didn't find any suitable proposal for a long time and for certain rituals or due to society pressure they needed to be married.

Some couple do it when their newborns do not survive long- another trick- they marry it off to another kid or sometime sell it to a relative or friend- symbolically now the child is not their anymore but belongs to a new family and they hope it will survive that way. The idea behind is that kids were dying due to their own sins and thus they free the kid of it's effects by disassociating themselves with it in a way.

In case of animal or tree each party is free to take another husband and dump the first one without needing a divorce.

Superstitions - yes , result of lack-of-education/desperation(?) - pretty often, but I'm not sure if their idea of sin and crime is same as yours here.

Marrying underage kids or selling them is a crime by legal definition- but can the effect of the "sin" which was being dodged in these cases be classed as crime?

Stuff like this happened before. 19 year old Maudie Hopkins married an 80 year veteran from the Civil War. So she was his widow until she died in 2008.

Did anyone even bother to read the actual article:

The second ceremony took place because the boy wanted to make it "official," though members of both families made it clear that the marriage was not legally binding, the pair do not live together and, as the Independent reports, they don't have sexual relations.

There is nothing wrong with this kind of marriage. I am also beyond shocked that many people believe marriage to be the equivalent of sexual relations. How ignorant can people get?
