A lot of people say he did it JUST because his childhood crush (Rin) died. However he stated it himself against kakashi in their battle that he didn't only started the war over him or rin. I believe back then Obito just wanted to change the world since it was and still is a horrible place, and rin's death just triggered his ideals. Obito grew up with no parents and was completely lonely, was desperate for acceptance and was also wasn't all that of a good ninja just like naruto. Now the person Rin Nohara.
Yes obito loved her, she was everything to him because i guess one of the reasons is because she acknowledged him and she was very caring towards him, something which Obito didn't have before. Obito's dying wish back then to kakashi in the third great ninja war was to protect rin, probably the first person who was kind to him and when she died obito lost all hope in the world and who can really blame him? Also another thing is after he woke up from his apparent death he wasn't with a good person, he was with a very bad person who was Madara Uchiha. Madara brain washed obito and also planned rin's death. I think he would of gotten over Rin's death if he had great people around him. Like kakashi, look how much he suffered but he never went astray due to the major fact that he was surrounded by FRIENDS and GOOD people and let's not forget it was also maybe because obito in trusted him with his sharingan.
At the climax of his fight with Naruto,sasuke and everyone else he started to have regrets at the wrong time. Seeing his past self in Naruto made him change his mind, but if that didn't happen then i honestly believe obito would of won if it wasn't for the sake of the plot i really think he could of done it. People loved obito as Tobi but in my opinion all Tobi was , was just a masked madara with kamui. That's what i feel like, ,maybe because he had madara's voice in the anime who knows, maybe that's why though he also knew things which only the real madara (and black zetsu) would know. someone out there would of been disappointed no matter who tobi was though.
So yeah, i just feel like Obito wanted to change the world so no one would have to suffer again after everyone would of been put in the infinite tsukoyomi, in the end he was just a victim of the uchiha curse and a victim of the cruel reality but his regrets got in the way. Some people have said he was hurt because Rin loved kakashi and yeah he must of been hurt but he probably accepted that. What he didn't accept is the way she died. Obito might not of been the best villain but he a way he has trained Naruto of the harsh reality.
Now i think i could of done better here but but brain is feeling a little lazy plus if i have made errors my bad since this is the first time i have created a topic here, have a good day naruto fans =)
