I'd heard that Mandela was actually in prison for terrorism or something along those lines and that government saw how influencial he was, propositioned him his freedom on the condition that he ends apartheid which he would obviously agree to and when he was released was when the ball got rolling and to this day, I don't know about elsewhere but here in England we are taught in our schools that his time in prison is what ended apartheid
