Did Lionel Messi deserve the golden ball award?

Messi played quite well throughout the tournament no doubt, but he was not nearly the dominant force in the knockout rounds, and considering he was scoreless in those games I think there where other candidates worthy of the award. I actually think Manuel Neuer was in contention for the golden ball as well.

Thoughts?

I think they gave it to him to show some respect, since he didn't get the chance to win WC, which he truly desired ...
And don't forget he's the worlds best player also ... :)

No he didn't, but I knew FIFA would give it to him. IMO Rodriguez deserved it more.

He vomitted at the end of the first half. And he got it out of respect.

When was that shown?

It wasn't shown. Only saw a picture afterwards.

And everybody saying Rodriguez or Robben deserve it more, they didn't make it to the finals. A player who doesn't make it in the finals doesn't earn the award. Messi himself probably ask himself why he got it. It simply respect wise. And no player from Germany gives a **** after all. It's just the fans being butthurt.

He captained his team to the finals of the worldcup and scored 4 goals and 1 assist and created most goal scoring opportunities. So yes he deserves it. Meanwhile ronaldo is at home watching on the tv.

Statistically, no, he did not; both Rodriguez and Müller would have been more deserving in that regard. It is what it is, though.

That's stupid, James had better stats in less games, and if it was about respect they would've given it to Klose for passing the record in his last World Cup

Like I said somebody who isn't in the finals simply doesn't get that achievement. It's like getting finals MVP in the NBA without making it to the finals.

Klose won the WC and is on top of the list for scoring all time, if that's not enough respect to give him then I don't know.

Still stupid, he took the team on his back

Yeah cuz having 4 Ballon D Or is not respect enough

And that's not respect to him, that's his acomplishments

That's how the world of sports is after all. Accept it or leav it.

He obviously didn't but the FIFA system is corrupted enough to give him prices even when he doesn't deserve it

No, someone like Robben, Müller, Lahm or Schweinsteiger deserved (and a few others) it more, he won because he is Messi

But honestly if it was possible I would have given it to Neuer
