So I was recently re-reading the 7th Harry Potter book and was quite amazed with how many parallels between HP and Naruto I could suddenly find. Here is a concise list which is meant as a literary analysis rather than a definite statement on the similarity of the two. . . please enjoy it simply as an analysis / comparison.

1. Both main heroes, orphans whose parents died while protecting them, were protected by their mother's strong chakra / magic

  • Kushina's chakra protected Naruto from Kurama.
  • Lily Potter lay a strong spell on the residence to be impossible to find until Harry comes of age.

2. Both heroes were saved by their parents at the brink of death

  • Naruto was saved by Minato and Kushina two times when he was being overtaken by Kurama.
  • Harry was saved by his parents when he was about to be killed by Voldemort in the Goblet of Fire

3. Both heroes were shunned and considered to be "mosters" at one point

Naruto was the Jinchuuriki, and Harry was the "snake" in HP and the Chamber of Secrets.

4. Ultimate anti-hero who is actually a double spy and cares deeply for the main character, fighting and sacrificing himself until the very end - a martyr.

In Naruto:

Itachi's ultimate goodness and love for Sasuke revealed only after death

In HP:

Snape's ultimate good and care for Harry revealed at his death

5. Both have a quirky multidimensional white-haired sage who wanted world peace and died while on a quest for information

Naruto:

Jiraya died and left a cryptic puzzle for Naruto about Pain's real body

HP:

Dumbledore died and left a cryptic puzzle for Harry about R.A.B and the horcruxes

6. Main character possesses a "specialty" jutsu / spell which he likes to use and which ultimately becomes his key trump card in the fight against the final villain

  • Naruto's hidden Kage Bunshin behind the RS gives the final blow to the lat Pain body
  • Harry's disarming Expelliarmus is able to stand against Voldemort's killing spell, and he becomes notorious for using it in battle, similar to how Naruto becomes notorious for using clones
  • Harry also excels at the Patronus, which he was initially very bad at, just like Naruto was at clones and chakra control; eventually Naruto gains superior control through sage mode and tail beast mode, and HP a superior Patronus

7. Our hero "dies" and is "rescued" by a sage

Hogoromo and Dumbledore, both visit the characters in a "limbo" realm and inspire them on further course of action

8. Madara takes the Rinnegan from Nagato's grave, while Voldemort takes the Elder Wand from Dumbledore's grave

9. Orochimaru wanted to achieve immortality by breaking apart his soul into various places and bodies, just like Voldermort with his horcruxes. In addition, both were brilliant students in their childhood and obsessed with / had affinity for snakes

10. Both main characters value friendship above anything else, just like their father had done:

Naruto, like Minato, knows that teamwork and understanding is the way to peace, and believes in this almost blindly.

Same with Harry.
“No, I think you’re like James,” said Lupin, “who would have regarded it as the height of dishonor to mistrust his friends.”

Like Minato was "betrayed" by his "failure" of a student Obito, James Potter was also betrayed by his rather failure of a wizard Peter Pettigrew.

11. Of course, both Naruto and HP are specifically said to be the "Child of the Prophecy", but both had very difficult childhoods with taunting by the other kids and no parental love.

12. Both Minato and James Potter married a fiery readhead. ;-)

Lily Evans / Kushina Uzumaki

*edit:
13. Both Harry and Naruto are cursed / blessed with a special power
  • Harry has the scar and can speak parseltongue/get inside Voldemort's mind which he struggles to control
  • Naruto is a jinchuuriki of a kyuubi which he struggles to control
Thanks for reading, and let me know if you have any more . . . :bye:

You could do this with almost any work of fiction. They all follow the same pattern. Good post though :) try and find the parallels in other stories now lol

like I say Naruto's story is cliche and this only further proves it.

You kinda covered it but also the fact that they were both 'cursed': Harry got scar and a part of Voldemort in himself and Naruto has Kyuubi. Oh yeah haha and they both have forbidden forests/training grounds (chuunin exams part 2).

Yeah you could, but both Naruto and HP just really stuck out to me because of the strong correlation of their personalities/stories/supporting characters. ^_^ Thanks!

like I say Naruto's story is cliche and this only further proves it.

Haha, yes, but I love the personalities and the humor / sentimentality of it nonetheless!

Great point indeed, thanks for pointing this out more clearly! *_* I guess in being the "Chosen One" = having Kyuubi or the mark, since because that stuff happened because they were chosen ones to begin with. (As Minato said, "I sealed Kurama in you because you were my son [and Child of the Prophecy]", and Voldy tried to kill HP because he was the Child of the Prophecy).

Thank you ^_^ but no need. I just thought it would be fun to point out some of these parallels. I wonder if Kishi had thought about HP at any point (IMHO, I have not encountered many literary works which specifically use "The Child of the Prophecy" and a hotheaded main character whose parent's strong spells protect them, so maybe he wonders of this similarity too? XD).

Oh and this is great:
