This is dubbed in anime 'Fate will never smile on the fortunes of a ninja , who seeks victory by falling on his own sword, or demanding that others fall on theirs.'

So obviously this means that hard work is not enough for being a good shinobi. That you do not need to just work hard in order to become great(or kill yourself trying) and that also you cannot except your enemies to 'fall on their own swords' or better said 'to just drop dead', you need to screw them over with a nice technique or a clever plan instead of just charging into battle without thinking. So how do we convey this to a real life situation?

A month ago i read in my management book that for an excellent performance you need to have a great motiovation, ability and that situational factors are also relevant. So meaning if you work hard and have a lot of knowledge you still might not succeed. Because your enemies or competition in life will not most likey just happen to screw themselves over('fall on their own sword'), does this mean that we need to screw them ourselves by giving them false info or just not helping them or something like that? xD

Sorry if i wrote too much, i hope you understand the point of the thread. How do we translate this sentance into a real life situation? :neji: :hi:

Neji and his fate quotes lel.

Umm, in real life, it would be like: if you only prepare yourself for victory, you'll be crushed when a defeat comes.

or something like that

I don't think it has too much to do with deception—although you could interpret it that way—I just think Neji is saying that regardless of drive, those with true talent will always have an edge over those who don't. Also, and more importantly, that it is not worth throwing your life away in order to succeed, which is what Lee was trying to do.

I think he was referring to Lee's use of the Eight Gates, which severely damaged his muscle tissue. He tried to win with a method that would injure him, and thus fell on his own sword

No, he's saying there's no way life will allow for a pyrrhic victory, that is, a victory that comes that great cost to one's self. For example, Lee hoped the beat Gaara by using the Eight Gates which would damage his body severely. In the Naruto world, Neji is clearly wrong as Minato won such a victory over Kurama(at the cost of his own soul), Hiruzen technically won such a victory over Orochimaru, Kid Naruto VS Kabuto, Neji himself claimed such a victory over Kidomaru, Chouji VS Jirobo is another example, Guy VS Kisame, Obito VS Konan are all good examples of such victories.

In real life...hmmm...guess suicide bombing counts lol.
