Because it gives people a sense of purpose people either hate on a character, glorify that character. . . That's pretty much it or characters they don't care for. Basically don't let your favorite character get fodderized or else he or she or it will be hated on and downplayed into oblivion. Which is why people can't like certain characters anymore cause their just looked down upon, kind of sad.
