I think Sakura, Lee, Gaara/Kankuro would make a good team.
Sakura would heal Lee constantly and reduce painful drawback of gates.
Gaara can provide defense for CqC fighters who are vulnerable to damage.

Or Kwnkuro would utilize poisons with Sakura, puppet users are vulnerable in close range so Lee can cover that. He can also control Sakura like Chiyo did to make her dodge attacks.

I'd say Gaara/shika and lee.

Gaara for range and defence.

Shikamaru for planning, Can easily fly of Gaara's sand to get a view of the whole battle field and maybe use the shadows created by Gaara's sand.

Lee for ground assults.

Dodging Lee's speed + Gaara's sand, While keeping an Eye on shikamaru's shadows would be a tough job.

U also must have missed when Gaara was the only one to step to blind madara after everyone was scared after he shrugged of sasuke .. Granted in the end madara used his Susanno to get out ... But Gaara still stepped up as a general


Not to mention when Gaara was running around with naruto who was barely alive desperately trying to save his friend who he knows was the best chance at winning this war
